Germany Resumes Arms Exports to Israel Following Ceasefire

Germany has announced the resumption of arms exports to Israel starting 24 November, following a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. This decision reverses the suspension of military equipment sales imposed in August when Israel planned a ground offensive in Gaza City. The ceasefire, effective since 10 October, marked the beginning of a phased peace deal between Israel and Hamas.

Germany, a key supplier of arms to Israel after the US, halted shipments earlier due to UN concerns over potential displacement and fatalities. The move was criticised by allies, even as Germany reaffirmed its support for Israel's right to defend itself while expressing deep concern about civilian suffering in Gaza. Chancellor Friedrich Merz highlighted the humanitarian crisis and conveyed his aspirations for a peaceful transition.

A spokesperson for the German government stressed the importance of adhering to the ceasefire and providing substantial humanitarian aid. Germany's export rules will now follow a case-by-case basis, signalling careful consideration of future arms deals. Between 2020 and 2024, Germany contributed to 33% of Israel's arms imports, focusing on naval vessels and other military hardware, reported the BBC.

Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October, causing 1,200 deaths and taking hostages, leading to significant military retaliation. Since the ceasefire, there have been prisoner exchanges and the return of deceased hostages by Hamas, indicating tentative progress in the peace process. Observers are closely watching how these developments will shape the region's stability.

Key Takeaways:

  • Germany to restart arms exports to Israel from 24 November post-ceasefire.
  • Arms exports will be decided case-by-case, with humanitarian concerns highlighted.
  • The ceasefire has led to prisoner exchanges and peace process advancements.

Germany on the wrong side of history... once again.

This is a huge mistake as Israel has proven time and again that they cannot be trusted, they are a genocidal nation at this point, and their standing in the world has diminished to that of a pariah state.

Good news.

Germany fighting the good fight for once.

So, the country which committed the Holocaust is now rearming the county committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and ethnic cleansing?  Remember the Fawlty Towers episode "The Germans"  with "Don't mention the war"; maybe it is time to mention the War.

The country that was so guilty of antisemitism is now standing up to antisemitism. Kudos.

Of course, the antisemites on the left do not approve.

Is it just me, or does this speak more about financial greed than anything else?  Doubt that anything else is truly cared about.

Germany are helping Israel with their "Never again" pledge .

Jews vowed never to  be slaughtered en masse again after 1945 .

Germany are helping to stop another Holocaust from occurring

The Germans should only supply weapons if Israel stops attacking Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, and the West Bank Palestinians.

That can only happen once Hamas  and Hezbollah have been defeated/agree to peace terms

Interesting opinion.

So - being a leftist and therefore a self-appointed arbiter of what the rest of us can and cannot say, maybe you could confirm whether this move by Germany mean it's socially acceptable to start making jokes about "Zee Germunz" again?

This is ridiculous! When will Germany finally wake the f.ck up?! And then they wonder why we have Islamic  terrorists attacks here!

This from World Beyond War:

"Fun fact: no war has ever been launched by people doing everything possible to avoid it.

"Bonus fun fact: no modern war has ever been launched by people not claiming they were doing everything possible to avoid it.

"The United Nations has now voted — the “Security” Council that is (with Russia and China abstaining, as if they have some other planet to live on) — for an Orwellian “Peace Board” concocted by Donald Trump, to be run by Tony Blair, to oversee a military occupation of what’s left of Gaza.

"If there were ever a moment for the nations of the world to save themselves, to step forward and override the Security Council through the General Assembly with a “Uniting for Peace” measure (such as this) this is it!

"Sadly, some opponents of genocide raised in a culture unable to imagine solving certain problems without a military have convinced millions of people that any “Uniting for Peace” action must involve a military force. The Security Council has now provided the military force under Viceroy Blair. The General Assembly would now have to not only take bold action it has refused to take for years, but also reverse the action taken by the Security Council in the name of “peace,” and bar the use of a military labeled “peacekeepers” in favor of nonmilitary solutions beyond the imagination of millions of people. This is what one might call a big ask.

"The alternative is the normalization of not just genocide but also colonialism. By this precedent, which country will elder statesman Benjamin Netanyahu oversee the Peaceplundering of in some future decade?"

An Italian reporter claims he was fired by his news agency after asking EU spokespeople at an EU press conference if they'd call upon Israel to pay to rebuild Gaza as the EU has demanded Russia do after invading Ukraine. Apparently the EU complained to the journalist's news agency (probably threatened them) and the reporter was fired. You know the world is really turning upside down when even the EU starts copying media intimidation tactics like Trump.

    Russia invaded Ukraine

Palestine invaded Israel .

Both Russia and Palestine should be liable for rebuilding costs

What people claim is not always correct, and seldom the full story. I wouldn't jump to conclusions without the background information.
