China plans to buy 500,000 tonnes of Thai rice, offering significant relief to Thailand's export sector amid US tariff pressures. This move is seen as a mutually beneficial arrangement, helping Thailand offset reduced growth figures, predicted to drop to 0.6% in the final quarter from 3.2% in the first quarter. With Singapore's additional purchase of 100,000 tonnes, Thailand remains optimistic about meeting its rice export targets.

The rice deal with China is expected to be formalized next month during Chinese Premier Li Qiang's visit to Thailand for the Mekong‑Lancang summit. Political economist Somjai Phagaphasvivat highlights this as a strategic decision amid heightened US tariff policies affecting regional economies. Thailand continues to balance its relationships with both the US and China while playing a central role in the Global South's diversifying trade landscape.

Farmers and stakeholders welcome the rice purchase, with hopes for swift execution to benefit the rural economy. Pramote Charoensilp of the Thai Agriculturist Association notes ongoing exports to China, with room for future growth. Despite concerns, experts believe the price and quality of Thai jasmine rice should maintain strong demand globally.

Looking ahead, Thailand's government aims to maintain economic momentum through various initiatives like the Khon La Khrueng Plus scheme. The focus remains on sustaining public support by addressing economic challenges robustly. Concurrently, rice market fairs organized by the Department of Internal Trade are addressing local issues by connecting farmers with buyers directly, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • China’s purchase aids Thailand amid US tariff challenges.
  • Farmers and government are optimistic about rice exports.
  • Future initiatives to sustain Thailand's economic growth.

Very good, but what if this creates shortage in Thailand and surges the prices ?

Should not, looks if it will be Thai Jasmin rice that will be exported, lot of Thais eat other rice varieties. Khow Partoom, Khow Sow-high, plus other cheaper verities than your Jasmin rice.

Also known as Khow Kang, hard rice, they say it fills you up more than Jasmin rice for a lot of people, that's what counts.

I expect they will export all the old stock and lower quality rice...

Money for the millers and the wholesalers and little to nothing for the actual farmers is my call on this one.

Perhaps  they can sell some of the rice still in storage from the Yingluck era

Exactly, this is what I was about to write too.

We grow sticky rice here.

Only four rais, the rest of the property is covered by rubber trees and fruits.

In the beginning my wife grew some Jasmine fragrant rice for me, but not any more. In fact, I eat more potatoes than rice and I like sticky rice too.

We buy now and then a bag of Jasmine rice we eat when she prepares red curry, for instance.
