Putin In Panic as Russia’s Economy Faces $100 Billion Time Bomb

One of the most urgent concerns centres on Russia’s banking sector. According to analysts, as much as 20% of loans in major Russian banks could become non-performing within the next year. (New York Post). This scenario presents a hidden contingent liability for the state — estimated by some observers at around $100 billion, comparable to a national budget crisis.

On top of financial sector risks, Russia is flat out of easy revenue streams. The war in Ukraine has diverted huge resources, roughly 40% of the state budget by some estimates, into defence and military procurement. (The Guardian) At the same time Western sanctions and global energy shifts have hit Russia’s traditional income from oil and gas. Analysts note that the “war economy” model initially held up — thanks to commodity price spikes and import substitution — but now that model is unravelling. (Financial Times).

The budget deficits are growing. A recent report showed a deficit of around 4.9 trillion rubles ($58 billion) in the first half of 2025, already surpassing the full-year target. (AP News) With Russia having depleted large portions of its National Wealth Fund and reserves, the cushion that once underpinned Putin’s claim of economic resilience is shrinking fast.

For Putin, the question isn’t just whether the economy will hold — it’s how he will respond when it doesn’t.

Well, to give Trump some credit, there is a sector that he prioritizes over the interests of his BFF Vladimir Putin. It's the US oil and gas industry. As you may recall, he imposed huge tariffs on India for importing Russian oil. That has the effect of boosting the price of oil from other source above where it otherwise would be.

It's the right time for Trump to put pressure on Ukraine to accept the Russian peace plan, before Russia gets weakened by financial issues!
