The Dodo Bird is an intense one act drama, being presented by The Gate Theater Group of Chiang Mai, which explores what it means to live on the fringe of society, to be a man who failed to achieve the universal dream of being able to sustain himself and his family and ceased to live by the culture's basic standards. The Dodo Bird represents those we often choose not to see: the guy with glazed eyes walking down the street talking to himself, carrying a bottle in a brown paper bag, maybe asking for change. All these Dodo Birds came from someplace, had parents once, maybe their own famlily, maybe a job.

In this play by Emanuel Fried, set in a nondiscript western industrial town, the Dodo bird is fortunate to work as a millwright's helper, due to the kindness of millwright Russ Nowark, who keeps him on despite hospital frequent visits for the d.t.'s; the job is just enough to get by on.

The story of how this particular human being reached this point of desperation and isolation is revealed in one evening in a bar across the street from the foundry, where the Dodo Bird is sober, washed, and waiting for a visit from his estranged daughter.

The characters in this play define themselves by what they do and when their job is threatened in any way they become anxious and agressive. The pecking order in the factory produces a pecking order outside-when the antagonist "Bull," is bullied by his boss, he come's across the street to the bar to unleash his rage on an easy target, the Dodo Bird, who's at the very bottom of the heap. The Dodo Bird lost his identity as a man and provider when the specialized machine he worked on became obsolete. The loss of his job led to the loss of his sobriety, self respect, wife, home and daughter.

We would love to get all the Thai Visa members in the Chiang Mai area as well as those elsewhere, to come out and support our efforts. We will offer a discount ticket for TV forum members as well as a free preview performance for anyone who would like to see this play.

The play opens at AUA (Language School) Auditorium, 24 Rajadamnern Rd. on October 19 with additional performances on the 20th and 27th.

Show starts at 7:30 pm each night. Donation will be 250 bt. or whatever you can afford to give.

Hi there . . .are you an am/dram or professional group?

Farang farang/Thai or Thai?

Do you ever do musicals?

David

Yes, amateur at this point. However, a quarter of the cast has worked professionaly. It'a a four character play :o

This is our first presentation. Musicals are difficult to do well and expensive to produce so you probably won't see any on our scedeule for quite some time.

That'll make one of you then :o

I'm due in Lamphun early Jan and looking things to 'get into' so maybe can contact you then?

I have MD and stage experience, also play the piano (but a tad rustier than I wish!)

Depends as to the musical regarding cost, something like Stepping Out the musical by Richard Harris

could be done with just a piano!

If you have a collect emails for a mailing list for further shows, PM me and I'll give you an email to add. Also, if you have a wet site up that has info on any shows, can you let me know of that.

Cheers Gato.

Anybody in the Chiang Mai area got a line on a couple of barstools, 2 small cafe tables, old cash register or anything that would look at home sitting in a bar? Would like to borrow rent or have these things donated to the theater. Contact

thegatetheater(at)asia.com Thanks
