Thailand’s Expressway Authority (Exat) announced that toll fees will be waived on three expressway routes on December 5th, marking Father’s Day and the birthday anniversary of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The toll exemption is set from 12:01 am to midnight across 63 toll booths on the Chalerm Maha Nakhon Expressway, Si Rat Expressway, and Udon Ratthaya Expressway. This move aims to reduce travel costs for motorists and facilitate smoother transit on this national holiday.

The toll waiver is part of a policy by Exat and the Ministry of Transport, in accordance with revised concession agreements involving Bangkok Expressway and Metro Plc and Northern Bangkok Expressway Co Ltd. The initiative is designed to honor the beloved late King and to alleviate financial burdens on the public while encouraging travel and family gatherings during this significant day.

The policy has garnered positive reactions from the public and analysts who see it as a supportive gesture towards the citizens. By eliminating tolls for the day, Exat hopes to promote wider acceptance and use of the expressway systems, fostering a more connected nation. This measure is also expected to help reduce traffic congestion during the holiday period, as it encourages driving as a preferred mode of transport.

Looking ahead, similar toll exemption initiatives might be considered for future public holidays, as part of the government's ongoing efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and public welfare. Motorists are encouraged to take advantage of this toll-free day and can contact the Exat call center at 1543 for more information. This plan aligns with broader strategies to enhance the quality and accessibility of national transport networks, reported Bangkok Post.
