Cambodia Tourist Arrivals Fall 46%

Cambodia’s tourism sector has been dealt a severe blow, with international arrivals plunging 46% in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period last year. Just 1.99 million visitors entered the country between January and July, according to figures released by the Ministry of Tourism.

The decline is stark when set against Cambodia’s best years. In 2019, the country welcomed a record 6.61 million international visitors, generating billions in revenue and cementing its reputation as one of Southeast Asia’s rising destinations. By 2024, recovery after the pandemic was strong, with 6.7 million arrivals — slightly surpassing the pre‑COVID peak.

Tourism Minister Huot Hak said the current downturn reflects “heavy regional and global headwinds”. He pointed to negative publicity surrounding online scam networks, tensions along the Thai border, and rising fuel costs linked to Middle East conflicts as key factors dampening travel enthusiasm.

China, Vietnam and the United States remain Cambodia’s top inbound markets, though all have seen steep declines this year. Tourism, alongside agriculture, construction and real estate, and manufacturing exports, is one of the nation’s four economic pillars.

The figures underscore the scale of the challenge facing officials. Once buoyed by Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh’s cultural landmarks and Sihanoukville’s beaches, Cambodia now faces the task of restoring confidence in its tourism brand. With global uncertainty persisting, the question is whether the country can rebound to the heights of 2019 and 2024 — or whether the current slump signals a longer struggle ahead.
