The ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has escalated, directly impacting the border economy and residents' daily lives. Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), expressed concerns over safety and economic deterioration due to repeated provocations by Cambodia. Reports indicate that incidents involving landmines and booby traps inside Thai territory have caused casualties among Thai soldiers.

The conflict intensified when evidence was presented by the Thai Foreign Ministry at an international meeting, allegedly showing Cambodian troops staging bomb-planting demonstrations. This revelation led to heightened tensions, with Cambodia resorting to weaponry that injured Thai soldiers and sparked further clashes. On December 7, the situation worsened as the use of anti-tank and heavy weapons was reported.

In response, the Royal Thai Air Force deployed F-16 fighter jets targeting strategic locations used by hostile forces. Kriengkrai mentioned that the conflict affects US-Thai relations, particularly around border dispute negotiations. A recent letter from the USTR suggests that the US considers this issue unresolved, freezing tariff negotiation talks.

Significant evacuations are occurring, with hundreds of thousands of Thai residents fleeing border districts in several provinces. This mass evacuation has stifled economic activity, slashing border trade with Cambodia to just 0.5% of normal levels. Daily trade losses are estimated at around 500 million baht, as numerous sectors, including agriculture and manufacturing, come to a standstill.

Kriengkrai emphasized the urgent need for resolution to prevent long-term disruptions and to restore economic activity along the frontier. He noted that the prolonged conflict risks demoralizing those displaced, urging swift action to prevent further economic and social erosion. The situation remains critical, and Thai authorities are seeking engagement with international counterparts to clarify their position and pursue peaceful negotiations, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • The conflict has drastically reduced trade at the Thailand-Cambodia border.
  • Mass evacuations and economic halts are disrupting livelihoods in border provinces.
  • The situation is affecting US-Thai negotiations, freezing tariff talks.
