Cambodia’s Car Market Shifts Into Gear

Cambodia’s automotive industry is entering a new era, with structured service networks replacing the informal garage culture that dominated for decades. At the centre of this transformation is A‑Klasse Auto, a Phnom Penh‑based workshop that has become a symbol of how far the market has matured.

Founded in 2020 and led since 2022 by General Manager Mell Manin, A‑Klasse operates with the discipline of a dealership but the flexibility of an independent garage. Its ISO‑certified facilities run on documented processes, digital records and tiered technician training—an approach still rare in Cambodia but increasingly demanded by customers.

The timing is crucial. Trade data shows new vehicles now account for more than half of Cambodia’s car market, up from just 19 per cent in 2018. With seven assembly plants active in the Kingdom, the days of imported “grey market” cars are fading. Modern vehicles, packed with sensors and electronics, require more than improvisation; they need systems, standards and accountability.

Manin, whose career spans roadside repairs, teaching, industrial manufacturing and dealership management, says trust is now the currency of the sector. “Customers today are educated. They compare. They ask questions. If you lose trust once, you lose them forever.” That philosophy appears to be working: around 60 per cent of A‑Klasse’s monthly clients are repeat customers, a figure unthinkable a decade ago.

The company is also preparing for the next wave—electric vehicles. Registrations surged by 620 per cent in 2024, with thousands more hitting Cambodian roads this year. Servicing EVs requires specialised tools, isolation zones and strict safety procedures. A‑Klasse has already begun overseas training for its technicians, recognising that high‑voltage systems leave no room for error.

For Manin, the rise of A‑Klasse is not just about one company but about the industry’s coming of age. Independent garages once thrived on low prices and quick fixes. Today, customers expect reliability, documentation and warranties that mean something. “Cambodia is not behind anymore,” he insists. “The market is ready now for professional standards.”

As the service bays in Phnom Penh hum with quiet efficiency, the message is clear: Cambodia’s automotive market is no longer under construction—it is shifting firmly into gear.
