Putin Ally And Ex Deputy Defense Minister Dies On Christmas Day.

General Yuri Sadovenko, a long-time Kremlin insider and former deputy defense minister under Vladimir Putin, died suddenly on Christmas Day at the age of 56, according to Russian media. Reports said he died “from heart disease,” but offered no further details.

Sadovenko was considered close to former defense minister Sergei Shoigu, who now serves as secretary of Russia’s Security Council. Sadovenko had been removed from his post in May 2024 following Shoigu’s ouster.

Born in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, in 1969, Sadovenko was a graduate of the Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School and served in the armed forces before moving into senior government roles, including the Ministry of Emergency Situations and later the Moscow regional administration. In 2013, he became Chief of Staff to the Defense Minister, rising to deputy defense minister as part of Shoigu’s inner circle.

His death comes amid a string of sudden or unexplained deaths involving senior Russian political, military, and security figures. In recent days, Lt-Gen Fanil Sarvarov reportedly died in a Moscow car bombing. Last week, Lt-Col Stanislav “Spaniard” Orlov — founder of the far-right Española volunteer unit fighting in Ukraine — was also confirmed dead.

Earlier this year, Olympic wrestling champion-turned-officer Lt-Col Buvaysar Saitiev died after falling from a Moscow window, with officials citing cardiac arrest. In July, Transport Minister Roman Starovoit was reported to have died by suicide, though an independent outlet later claimed signs of beating were found on his body. Another senior official, Andrey Korneichuk from the Federal Road Agency, died the same day, with state media attributing the cause to “acute heart failure.”

While Russian authorities maintain official medical explanations in most cases, the steady drumbeat of deaths has fueled speculation about factional struggles and instability inside Russia’s elite during the ongoing war in Ukraine.
