Taiwan Grounds Entire F-16 Fleet After Jet Vanishes

Taiwan's air force has taken the decisive action of grounding its F-16 fleet following a distressing incident where a jet and its pilot vanished. The disappearance occurred during a routine training mission off the island's northeast coast. The search for the missing Captain Hsin Po-yi and his aircraft is ongoing, yet challenging weather conditions have hampered efforts.

On Tuesday night, an American-made F-16 from the Taiwan Air Force's Fifth Tactical Air Wing disappeared after it lost radar contact while performing a nighttime exercise. Officials reported the jet descended rapidly to just 1,700 feet before vanishing. The pilot had indicated that he might eject, though it's unclear if he managed to do so. The search and rescue operations have been relentless but face difficulties due to rough seas around Hualien County.

Air Force authorities have identified a potential malfunction in the F-16's main onboard computer, specifically regarding the aircraft's flight path display. In response, all 140 of Taiwan's F-16s have been grounded for safety inspections. These aircraft form a critical component of Taiwan's defense, with recent upgrades made to augment their capabilities. The air force will eventually strengthen its fleet with the anticipated arrival of newer F-16V models.

This incident mirrors a similar crash in January 2022, when an F-16 went missing during training exercises. Such occurrences, while unsettling, follow a pattern seen in other military forces, including the US, which ground fleets during investigations. Taiwan's air force has faced repeated strains due to frequent responses to Chinese aircraft incursions, stretching both personnel and equipment to their limits, reported Business Insider.

Key Takeaways

  • An F-16 and its pilot have disappeared, prompting a fleet-wide grounding.

  • Rough conditions hinder ongoing rescue operations for Captain Hsin Po-yi.

  • Past incidents and operational strain have been major challenges for Taiwan's air force.

It did not just vanish.

It flew behind the Bamboo Curtain.

This has happened several times in recent decades.

There is a huge reward for any pilot who can escape Taiwan, and fly to the Chinese coast, without being shot down by one's fellow Taiwan pilots.

How much is a F-16 worth?

Would be a good reason to ground the entire fleet too. Not just the check the computers, but to do a background check or 3.

Look for it on a near by Chinese vessel 🤔😁

They might be hiding the defector.

The US has lost several aircraft this way.

This is why the most advanced aircraft are not considered for export to Taiwan.

Very fickle, these Taiwanese, you know....

Why would a Taiwanese defect to China?

Money, money, money, it’s always funny, in the rich man’s world.

...7 Billion, For A Tiny Nation...Just On Planes(?)

...With Mother Just 120 Miles Away...(?)

...Sounds Ludicrous...(?)

Not to mention that the opposition party, the KMT, wants to accommodate the PRC and install a relationship with the mainland modeled after that of Hong Kong. The KMT is easily within reach of gaining power. There should be no advanced US weaponry going to Taiwan.
