Russia Unleashes Rare Oreshnik Missile in Ukraine Assault

Featured Replies

Russia has launched a massive attack on Ukraine, deploying the rarely used Oreshnik ballistic missile. Continuous explosions lit up the night sky in Kyiv, resulting in four fatalities and 25 injuries. The Oreshnik strike represents the missile's second deployment, with its initial use occurring in November 2024 against Dnipro.

The Russian defence ministry stated the strike was a countermeasure to a supposed Ukrainian drone attack on President Putin's residence in December, which Ukraine denies. Videos surfaced showing explosions near Lviv, despite the Oreshnik's specific target remaining unannounced.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the missile hit infrastructure in Lviv, close to the Polish border. The Oreshnik, capable of reaching 5,500 km, uses warheads that fragment into several separately targeted projectiles, causing multiple explosions.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha labelled the strike as a grave security threat to Europe, considering its proximity to EU and NATO borders. The EU has expressed scepticism about the alleged drone attack against Putin, and on Friday, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that Russia's actions were a warning to Europe and the US.

President Zelensky reported the attack also included 13 ballistic missiles, 22 cruise missiles, and 242 drones, damaging energy facilities and civilian infrastructure, including at the Qatari embassy.

The attack heavily targeted Kyiv, damaging key buildings and energy facilities and causing widespread power outages in severe winter conditions. Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to seek temporary warmth elsewhere, as many remained without heat due to infrastructure damage.

Russia's focus on power plants has been a consistent strategy, leading to escalating energy crises as Ukraine responds in kind. Concurrently, Russian regions experienced power losses due to retaliatory actions, such as Ukrainian shelling in Belgorod and strikes in Oryol, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways

  • Russia's rare use of the Oreshnik missile has resulted in significant damage.

  • Kyiv continues to struggle with power outages amidst severe winter conditions.

  • Tensions escalate as both sides target each other's energy infrastructure.

And there we go ....

After the thick events in Venezuala, the worlds police America literally have no authority to lecture anyone to stop the Russians now deploying a full takeover, nothing to stop China taking over Taiwan.

Huge gas storage facility in Lviv, Western Ukraine.

Nonsense, and there is (everything to stop China taking Taiwan). Likening Venezuela to that peaceful democratic island is a bit naive. If anything, China chasing Taiwan and Russia chasing Ukraine emboldened twitty Trump. Malduro is one of the above (read, not nice). Ayatollah whatshisname (same as the above again) should be sweating. It’s chess, not checkers.

So my thumbs down troll is at it again. I got a thumbs down for posting the location and target of the Oreshnik strike.

OK Karen. Ukraine is the backyard of the EU. The EU needs to deal with this war. Too bad the EU is feckless.

It's a sign of Putin freaking out (Venezuela/Iran and previously Syria).

It's not a sign of Russia winning this war.

No. It's Putin showing the EU he has a missile that can do Mach 10 with multiple re-entry warheads. This thing as of now cannot be intercepted.

For your information, do you realize that the situation in Venezuela is finger to Putin? The United States' seizure of illegal tankers is also a finger to Putin. The EU needs to take a stronger stance and take decisive action. Perhaps the EU could allocate the seized Russian funds to Ukraine instead of worrying about the potential legal repercussions from Putin. The EU is lacs the courage to act.

Putin is losing all his allies. All he has left is NK.

Rubbish.

That was already known.

It's Putin playing his nuclear threat game again.

Bluffing again to scare off Ukraine's supporters.

Putin is expending expensive hardware on a war he can’t win.

You forgot China and much of the non-aligned global south who refuse to swallow the west's hypocrisy and blatant double standards, concerning their discretionary application of the 'rules based international order.'

The United States of A never had the moral authority to lecture others. They have a long tradition of overtly or covertly (CIA Organized) overthrowing democratic regimes that they considered not "friendly" enough. Turning states all over the world into fascist dictatorships or banana republics, amenable to exploitation by US multi national companies.

They overthrew a democraticly elected government in Iran to install the US friendly, vicious regime of Shah Pachlavi, which led to the current theocracy.

Pinochet, and all the other military dictatorship in Latin America, Suharto in Indonesia, and on and on, shows the criminality of all American presidents since FDR.

And now we have an orange buffoon in the WH, who willy nilly bombs or threatens to bomb places all over the world.

Might makes right, this time might is a circus clown with the maturity of a toddler.

Dangerous times indeed.

Seems more likely that he had one, past tense. If he had more he'd use more. Last one was two months ago, so maybe it takes that long to make another.

Very expensive indeed. How many he has is speculation of course but my guess is there's more than one. These things would take quite a while to put together. As for if he had more he'd use more; why? He's got plenty of other missiles and 10's of thousands of drones. These are high value weapons and there's not many of them. Special use only.
