Kushner under fire: questions mount over Iran talks

Fresh scrutiny is falling on Jared Kushner after a dramatic sequence of diplomacy and military escalation involving the United States, Iran and Israel.

Critics and analysts are now asking whether negotiations in Switzerland were genuine attempts at a nuclear agreement — or whether diplomacy collapsed just as a major military strike was being prepared. The timing has ignited a political storm in Washington and beyond.

A Family Tie That Raises Eyebrows

The scrutiny is intensified by Kushner’s long-standing personal connection with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu was famously close to the Kushner family for decades, even staying at their New Jersey home during visits to the United States. The relationship has long been viewed as unusually personal for figures operating at the centre of high-stakes diplomacy.

Now that closeness is fuelling questions about influence and transparency as tensions explode across the Middle East.

Diplomacy on the Brink — Then the Bombs Fell

Negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme had reached a delicate moment in late February.

A third round of talks in Geneva reportedly ended with cautious optimism. The mediator, Badr Albusaidi, the foreign minister of Oman, said an agreement appeared “within reach,” with Iran signalling it would abandon any path toward nuclear weapons.

A fourth round was scheduled for Vienna. But less than 48 hours after the Geneva meetings ended, airstrikes began.

Intelligence Window Raises New Suspicions

According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, intelligence agencies had identified locations where senior Iranian officials were gathered shortly after the talks.

Those meetings reportedly involved the Supreme National Security Council of Iran — the body responsible for the country’s most sensitive strategic decisions.

Some diplomats now fear the negotiations may have unintentionally created a predictable window for intelligence targeting.

Conflicting Messages From Washington

The confusion has been compounded by contradictory explanations from senior officials.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested the strike was a response to imminent Israeli action. Trump later offered a different version, claiming Washington had effectively pushed Israel into moving sooner.

The gap between those explanations has only intensified demands for clarity.

Congress Faces a Credibility Test

The stakes now extend far beyond the immediate conflict.

Lawmakers in Washington are facing calls to summon Kushner and his diplomatic partners to testify about what they knew — and when they knew it. Critics argue the credibility of American diplomacy itself may be on the line.

If foreign governments conclude negotiations can double as targeting opportunities, diplomats warn the consequences could echo far beyond the current crisis.
