German Tourist Killed in Phayao Bike Crash

Featured Replies

A German tourist has died after crashing a motorcycle into the base of a hillside while riding with friends in Phayao province on March 14. Police in Chiang Muan district were alerted to the fatal crash on the Phayao–Chiang Muan route at a location known as the Triple Heaven Spot. Emergency services confirmed the rider died at the scene.

Officers from Chiang Muan Police Station coordinated with a forensic doctor from Chiang Muan Hospital and rescue workers from the Siam Ruamjai Pu In Foundation in Chiang Muan to investigate the incident. When officials arrived, they found a bike with a Chiang Mai registration plate lying on its side off the roadside. The body of the foreign male rider was discovered nearby.

Rescue personnel at the scene reported that the victim was a German tourist who had rented the motorcycle in Chiang Mai. He had been travelling with a group of friends on five motorcycles while touring scenic routes in Phayao province. The group had been riding together when the crash occurred.

Initial reports indicate the rider lost control while negotiating a curve at the location known locally as the Triple Heaven Spot. The motorcycle is believed to have left the road before crashing forcefully into the ground at the base of the hill. The impact caused the rider’s immediate death.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased. Police said further forensic examinations will be conducted as part of the investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Officials are gathering evidence from the scene and reviewing the sequence of events leading up to the accident.

Police stated that they will carry out a thorough inquiry to determine the precise cause of the crash. Investigators are expected to review the site and collect statements from individuals connected to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.

Khaosod reported that authorities will also coordinate with relevant organisations and the appropriate embassy to proceed with formal procedures following the death of the foreign national. Notification of the victim’s family and further administrative arrangements will be handled according to standard international protocols.

loss of control of a rented motorbike !

happened at "triple heaven spot" ! He is now in heaven !

RIP and condolences to family and friends.

A tragic death once more. It happens too often. Time for people to learn that Thailand is not the place to go for riding bikes, as it has a very high record of deaths, and also know for not having the best and easiest roads in the world.

Thailand is not renowned for having bad or difficult roads... the vast majority of roads in Thailand are excellent.

He's right on this one. Thailand's roads are among the worst I've seen in the countries I've visited, including rural Mexico, along with almost all of the US states, which have very good road departments and know how to fix them , and this coming from New Jersey, where potholes are legendary. There though there are a much higher percentage of autos on the roads, along with severe weather changes and salt, which affect roads.

Here it takes a long time to repair many roads, and they repair roads that don't need it, re-paving only a few months after doing it earlier. This is done all over for budgets, and it's a stupid practice, as there are roads very close to the repaired ones that are in horrible condition.

The highways here aren't too bad, although many of the shoulder areas are patched instead of repaired. The road infrastructure here also isn't favoring of the motorbike drivers, who account for the largest percentage of accidents and fatalities. You do enough daily driving here in many areas and come from a western country where roads are far superior it's easy to compare.

The drivers here are much worse, which accounts for the high death rates daily, but this type of accident can happen anywhere a person doesn't follow the speed limits. This is a recent link which shows the problems here..........https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0962629823001907

Unfortunately, loss of control on a bend is probably rider error - too fast, not lining up the bend properly, or both.

Riding a bike quickly needs a different set of skills to driving a car quickly. Experienced riders know this. The roads and their condition is usually the last of the considerations.

Roads are fine. Just go slow and wear a helmet. Basic physics.

Unless I misread the article for some reason they don't identify what sex the victim was? RIP to the he or she.

After reading today about foreign tourists dying from bike/car deaths, falling from condos and drowning etc. I wonder if Thailand keeps statistics of the annual foreign tourist deaths in Thailand and do not include natural deaths such as cancer, heart attack etc. I think the stats would be rather high.

This is from 2023 from Richard Barrow, doesn't say if car or motorcycle.

'117 foreigners died in road accidents in #Thailand this year. Another 4,095 were injured. Many with life changing injuries. Just the last week alone, 14 foreigners were killed in road accidents.'

Yeah, sure! The biggest problems are not the roads, but there are also terrible places where they are really bad.

As you say, drive slow, or in a speed you can handle. Helmet is a given and so should also other protection be if driving a big bike.

Sure, I have reverted a bit on that in another reply. :-)

What has it got to do with physics? Basic common sense perhaps. Nothing to do with physics.
