Trump’s ‘wild day’ ends in retreat and leaves US with little to show

A day of threats, brinkmanship and last-minute diplomacy from Donald Trump has ended not with victory, but with a fragile pause that may have handed leverage to Iran.

The US president agreed to delay military strikes on Iranian infrastructure after Tehran floated a proposal for talks. But analysts say the dramatic climbdown — following hours of threats about destroying Iran’s power plants and roads — raises a blunt question: what exactly did Washington gain?

A Proposal That Predated the Threats

According to reporting cited by Joshua Keating, world news correspondent at Vox, the 10-point proposal Trump accepted as a basis for negotiations had already been sent before his most dramatic warnings.

That means the White House appears to have stepped back from the brink without extracting new concessions. Trump had framed the threat of strikes as leverage. Yet the offer now on the table looks largely unchanged.

The result: a pause in escalation — but little sign of a breakthrough.

Sanctions Relief but No Nuclear Concession

The Iranian proposal reportedly includes a guarantee Iran will not be attacked again, an end to Israeli strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the lifting of sanctions.

In exchange, Tehran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow oil artery that carries roughly a fifth of the world’s crude shipments.

Crucially, the proposal does not require Iran to surrender its uranium stockpile or halt enrichment — demands that had been central to Trump’s shifting justification for military action.

Oil Chokepoint Becomes Iran’s Trump Card

Tehran has agreed to allow international shipping through the strait for two weeks — provided vessels coordinate with the Iranian military.

Iranian officials are already presenting the pause as a diplomatic victory, claiming Washington accepted their terms.

For strategists, the bigger shift is structural. By briefly closing the strait, Iran demonstrated it can weaponize the global economy — a threat it can deploy again whenever tensions rise.

A Familiar Middle East Pattern Emerges

The war has taken a heavy toll on Iran. Its air defences have been battered, its military leadership weakened by targeted strikes and its economy strained.

That outcome likely satisfies Israel, which long expected the campaign to end once Trump lost patience with escalation.

But the broader picture looks strikingly familiar. Iran remains in power, its nuclear programme intact, and the decades-long standoff with Washington unresolved.

For now, the crisis has simply returned to a familiar Middle East strategy: contain the threat, inflict damage — and prepare to do it all again.

Trump's 'wild day' was not a win for most Americans: report

Trump created a self humiliation and called it victory.

(Apologies to Tacitus)

Frankly, I hope Iran gets the bomb. There needs to be a balance in the Middle East. No more likely to use it than Israel.

ALL nations need to disarms. Ket's start with the most aggressive: the USA,

US is scrambling to fing the missile sites so needs more time

Trump cures cancer. Wah wah wah. It was well forecast whatever the outcome of any negotiation, that notorious irrational Trump haters would be along to spew their bile.

Id say an open strait and no violence is a fair dinkum outcome. After the fora left contingent assured us all Iranians were about to be nuked to atoms. Wrong as always fellas. My stock portfolio took a real shot in the arm today too. Pink champagne with our bbq rack of lamb this lunchtime. Cheers Donald😆

You don't have much use for honesty do you?

And I'm sure America's farmers who have taken a big hit with high fertilizer and diesel prices will be thrilled to learn about your alleged gains in the stock market. And all the other Americans and people around the world who are paying for Trump's failed venture.

A similar effect is noted when someone bangs your head against a wall and then stops.

When your mullahs murdered an estimated 45,000 peaceful protestors? Is that what you are trying to highlight? Was that non-violent? Why do the forum left have such disdain for the long suffering Iranian folk?

I suppose murdering 165 schoolgirls is OK, because the US has God on its side.

Bad news for Trump haters.

Nostradamus Elon Musk is predicting a "great 12 year period" for the US.

In a video conference, the entrepreneur declared that the country was entering a "great 12-year period," comprised of a second term for Donald Trump followed by two consecutive terms for JD Vance.
