Carney secures Liberal majority after special election wins

Featured Replies

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party has secured a slim majority in the House of Commons, solidifying its hold on power after being projected by Canadian media to win at least two seats in by-elections on Monday.

The election gains come a year after Carney took office, and follow five defections by opposition members of parliament to the Liberals.

Liberals would now hold 173 of the 343 seats in the House, giving Carney more latitude with his political agenda. Results in a third special election are still unclear.

Anyone remember how it looked for the liberals not so long ago?

Anyway, first Orban and now this. Not bad.

Well, if I were the PM I would be very very careful with the defectors who have given him his majority. They have proven themselves to be craven and soul-less.

I wish PM Carney the best. Now whatever happens, it will be his responsibility. If he stays as a Conservative-Lite, then I can live with it. Cutting government deficits, spending on the military, expanding resource production and infrastructure projects, I can get behind. As long as he spends minimal time on the kooky social agenda items, great.

Floor crossings should automatically need a by election. In all cases. I don't think thats unreasonable.

Otherwise whats the point of voting for a MP if they can just change their mind when they want to.

I wouldn't mind if they chose to sit as independents until an election could be held. But the reality is that most voters don't really care about the candidates in their ridings. They care about the party affiliation. So they are getting shafted by the opportunistic members who choose to abandon them. I think that is why the vast majority wind up actually losing when the next election cycle happens.

Will they be running as liberals in the next election? If the liberals are still popular and they fail to be nominated, why wouldn't they win?

Good question. I would think the actual Liberal candidates in their ridings would be a little peeved though. The ridings themselves lean COnservtive.

ETA; the latest Conservative MP to join the liberals, Marilyn Gladu, won her riding by 53% to 37% for the Liberals. She did the same the previous election as well.
