Pithaya Cafe in Quezon City has set up a community pantry to aid delivery riders and tricycle drivers facing rising fuel costs. Launched on April 13, the initiative provides free essentials such as vegetables, fruits, eggs, noodles, canned goods, and coffee. The cafe describes the pantry as a step toward giving back to the community during challenging times.

Pithaya Cafe opened its doors in February, navigating uncertainty with each decision, as shared in their Facebook post. Despite the challenges, the cafe emphasizes its commitment to creating a meaningful space that extends beyond serving coffee. Owner Shaina Sy Narca shared with Inquirer that the mission is to help those in need through small acts of generosity, despite the cafe's recent establishment and limited resources.

Delivery riders and tricycle drivers are among those severely impacted by escalating fuel prices. Prices have surged to triple digits per liter since March, causing significant strain on motorists. Some jeepney drivers have drastically reduced their operations due to minimal daily earnings. These price hikes stem from tensions in the Middle East, impacting oil supply channels due to military conflicts involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

Looking ahead, Narca plans to sustain and potentially expand the pantry two to three times a week, contingent on donor contributions. The intention is to grow the offerings and continue supporting the community during these challenging times.
