Satellite evidence shows vast Israeli demolitions across south Lebanon

Satellite imagery has revealed a sweeping campaign of destruction across southern Lebanon, with entire towns reduced to rubble in what analysts warn could mark a major escalation in the conflict.

BBC Verify says more than 1,400 buildings have been destroyed since early March, based on confirmed visual evidence. With limited access on the ground, the true scale is likely far higher.

Orders to ‘Accelerate Destruction’ Drive Campaign

The demolitions follow a 22 March directive from Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz to intensify operations near the border using a “model in Gaza”.

Israel says the campaign targets Hezbollah infrastructure embedded in civilian areas. The IDF insists it acts within the Law of Armed Conflict, requiring military necessity for property destruction.

Villages Flattened in Coordinated Blasts

Verified footage shows entire neighbourhoods detonated in controlled explosions. In Taybeh alone, more than 400 buildings — including a mosque — have been levelled within weeks.

Other towns, including Khiam and Aita al-Shaab, show similar patterns. In Aita al-Shaab, at least 460 buildings have been destroyed, with heavy machinery visible clearing debris.

Buffer Zone Strategy Raises Stakes

The demolitions align with plans for an Israeli controlled “security zone” stretching to the Litani River — roughly 10% of Lebanon's territory.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the aim is to prevent cross-border attacks. Critics argue it amounts to a long-term territorial shift under military pressure.

Mass Displacement and Mounting Casualties

The human toll is rising sharply. More than 1.2 million people have been displaced across Lebanon, with entire communities forced north or into Beirut.

Lebanese officials report over 2,000 deaths since the conflict escalated. Israeli authorities say Hezbollah attacks have killed 15 people in Israel in recent weeks.

Legal Alarm Over Potential War Crimes

International law experts warn the scale and pattern of destruction may breach humanitarian law. The destruction of civilian property is prohibited unless strictly required by military necessity.

Legal scholars argue that flattening entire villages to create buffer zones does not meet that threshold. Some suggest the campaign could amount to collective punishment.

Communities Erased, Pressure Mounts

Once densely built hilltop towns now appear as grey expanses of dust and debris. UN officials on the ground describe repeated large-scale demolitions and widespread devastation.

As the conflict deepens, the strategy is drawing increasing scrutiny — not just for its military aims, but for its long-term consequences across the region.

I better not say too much, some people get really upset when you criticize any thing Israel does.

Criticism is being called antisemitism and therefore not right.

I was called clueless before but am i really?

There is a legitimate reason Bibi has an international arrest warrant for war crimes and genocide.

I wonder how they will spin this?

Israel doesn't bother with spin. They want a Greater Israel even if it's flattened to the ground. As long as there are no Arabs in it.

I was meaning how some people here on AN might spin it but i think everyone seems to be scared to

touch this topic.
