Ho Chi Minh City and southern Vietnam are expected to enter the rainy season in early May, about 10 days ahead of schedule, according to meteorologists. This early onset, driven by a strengthening southwest monsoon, may bring severe weather, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hail. Residents are advised to prepare for these turbulent conditions.

Typically, the rainy season in southern Vietnam begins between May 10 and 20. However, this year, meteorologists anticipate the first rains could arrive as early as the beginning of May. Such transitions from dry to wet conditions in the region are often marked by intense weather patterns, underscoring the need for vigilance.

The potential for severe storms is evident from past occurrences. On May 10, 2025, an intense rainstorm in HCMC resulted in the heaviest first-season rainfall in eight years, causing significant flooding and disruptions. Unlike previous storms driven by typhoons, this one was caused by a collision between the southwest monsoon and a low-pressure trough, similar to current conditions.

Currently, southern Vietnam is experiencing high temperatures due to a hot low-pressure system. Temperatures in many areas are reaching 37-38°C, exacerbated by the urban heat island effect in densely built areas. Forecasters predict a weather shift around April 29-30, with a 50-70% chance of thunderstorms in parts of HCMC.

These brief rains on top of elevated temperatures may lead to uncomfortable conditions before the full onset of the rainy season. Researchers and officials encourage the public to take precautions against potential flooding and infrastructure impacts.
