August 25, 200718 yr Posted something similar in Real Estate but no takers. Don't ask me to search Following on from a thread in 'Real Estate' forum where some guy is building some decking, I was interested in what people think regards doing this type of work on one's house on one's tod? Best way to get a good job done or a defo no no? ie - is one likely to be deported and black stamped for 15 centuries if Mr Immigration snitch happens to be walking past when one is building decking, painting, minor brickwork? Not talking about building extensions or anything major like that, but would this matter considering these avenues of work are closed off to us aliens, albeit paid work? Remember reading sometime back about someone being deported for doing the gardening, which, although sounds far-fetched, wouldn't surprise me in the land of TiT. Anyone any concrete info (pun intended) or know of someone being booted out for such things? Cheers

Cheers unless you've upset somebody i doubt anything would happen ,live next door to a police man for 8 years ,done my own garden and pool cleaning ,he's never mentioned its against the law ,i do have a work permit but it only covers me for my place of business not my home..
August 25, 200718 yr The ministry of labour has a good quote about what exactly construes 'work' - but i cant remember it off the top of my head. As far as i'm aware, we can't do jobs from the 'protected occupations' list. Which probably includes 'house building' However, where does one draw the line? I do my own laundry for example, and i also cook Thai food for friends, i also ride my own motorcycle to school when i could just as easily take a motorcy taxi.......... Common sense should prevail. Home improvements should be ok - but what constitutes a home improvement? A lick of paint to your front gate, or building a two storey extension?
August 25, 200718 yr I can think of a million things more important to worry about. Similar to what a previous poster wrote, unless you have done something to really piss someone in government off your chances of getting busted for working on your own house are just about nil.
August 25, 200718 yr yeah the HR department at work warned me not to do much around the house in regards to improvements/maintainance etc... they said for the headaches involved it would be easier to pay somchai to do it.
August 25, 200718 yr I can't find the quote, but Sunbelt, our forum sponsor has dealt with this 'hypothetical' an number of times on Thai Visa in the past. Essentially, it is a nonsense and they deal with Department of Labour and Immigration almost on a daily basis. While I am prepared to be corrected by Sunbelt on this matter, I believe the gist of the authorities view is that working on ones home, odd jobs around the house, chores, hobbies etc etc etc aren't considered work to them.
August 25, 200718 yr I assume you need a work permit for this. But nonetheless, ain't I happy that I happen to know you!!! Can you weld as well? Got all the equipment, only forgot how to use it Nienke

Got all the equipment, only forgot how to use it Nienke Doesn't look like it, N, although working on someone elses house could perhaps be a potential problem should the wrong person think dosh is changing hands. Welding? Piece a cake; mig, tig, stick, oxy acetylene, you name it. JACK of all trades If you don't like pigeon sh1t though best ask Somchai the welder... it's been a few years since I messed with a torch. The types of jobs I'm considering doing to the house would be decking, some window work, messing about with the gate so the road train will fit on the drive. Stuff like that.
August 25, 200718 yr Author No need to worry. You'll be in the pub anyway mate. On the wagon after last weekend's TV meet believe it or not mate
August 25, 200718 yr I keep telling my wife I can't do any work around the house on account of not wanting to be deported.

Headaches meaning law hassles or doing the work hassles? Couldn't bear to watch Somchai ballsing up a job for a quick buck. Bit of an obsessive compulsive when it comes to doing a job right, especially when it's on one's pad. Don't mind em messing with porches n pillars, but the arty farty bits n bobs need to be A1

Sounds good to me. Surely they wouldn't be allowed to sell us all the DIY clobber in Home Pro et al if it was against the law, eh

August 25, 200718 yr I live in a small village...I did some of every kind of work on our house from digging the foundations and concrete to roofing, plumbing, and everything else....I never gave it a thought that it might be a problem and of course it has never been a problem. Everyone in our village knows I did this work...EVERYONE. I also am a small time rice farmer...rice farming is against the rules...EVERYONE in the village knows I do this...its not a problem. I think if you get along well with people in your community then you should have no problems...as long as you are not getting paid. It's just a hobby....hobbies are allowed from what I understand.

How about hiring a digger and digging the foundations, operating wacker plates (compactors), rotovators and other machinery? Same, same but different? Be on the safe side, wash your car in the dark.... I do. No streaks
August 26, 200718 yr Welding? Piece a cake; mig, tig, stick, oxy acetylene, you name it. JACK of all trades If you don't like pigeon sh1t though best ask Somchai the welder... it's been a few years since I messed with a torch. Same same, at least 15 years ago I learned how to weld. Since haven't practised and I forgot. The types of jobs I'm considering doing to the house would be decking, some window work, messing about with the gate so the road train will fit on the drive. Stuff like that. When I look at the cracks in the walls at one side of my office, i think I need it ALL with the next big earthquake
August 26, 200718 yr I keep telling my wife I can't do any work around the house on account of not wanting to be deported. Great Post!!! Personally I don't do a hands tap around the house.... you never know who's watching.
