Fresh alarm is rippling through Washington after claims that Donald Trump sought access to nuclear launch codes during a confrontation over Iran, fuelling renewed scrutiny of his record with the world’s most destructive weapons.

The allegation—denied by the White House and unverified—has nonetheless reignited fears among former officials who say the scenario fits a pattern they witnessed first hand.

From Prop to Power: The ‘Red Button’ Symbolism

Inside the Oval Office, Trump’s now-infamous red button—used to summon a Diet Coke—has long been treated as theatre. But for critics, it reflects something deeper: a fixation with power wrapped in spectacle.

Former insiders warn that behind the showmanship lies a more troubling reality—an instinct to escalate, not de-escalate, under pressure.

History of Escalation Raises Alarm

During his first term, Trump repeatedly pushed advisers on nuclear use, questioning why the US arsenal was not deployed more readily. He openly embraced the idea of an arms race, arguing America would “outmatch” rivals.

At the height of tensions with North Korea in 2017, officials quietly prepared for worst-case scenarios, including potential strikes on the US homeland—an extraordinary step that underscored how close the crisis came to spiralling.

Distraction at the Brink

Accounts from that period describe moments of stark disconnect. As North Korea tested a missile capable of reaching US territory, Trump reportedly focused instead on domestic immigration targets.

For senior officials, the concern was not just the threat abroad—but the unpredictability at the top of command.

A More Dangerous Landscape Emerges

Today’s geopolitical picture is even more volatile. Any confrontation involving Iran risks drawing in multiple nuclear-capable states, including Israel, while tensions with Russia and China continue to simmer.

Analysts warn the “geometry of escalation” is now far more complex—and far less controllable.

Testing the Limits of Restraint

Fears are also growing over reports the US could resume nuclear weapons testing for the first time since 1992. Such a move would shatter a decades-long global norm and could trigger a cascade of new tests by other powers.

For critics, the danger is no longer just a single decision—but the steady erosion of the rules designed to prevent catastrophe.

Pressure Builds as Safeguards Strain

The ultimate concern is not accidental escalation, but deliberate disruption. Systems built to contain risk rely on restraint at the highest level—something some former officials argue cannot be assumed.

As global tensions tighten, the question is no longer hypothetical. It is whether the guardrails will hold—or give way under mounting pressure.

I believe Trump will set off a nuke before leaving office. I saw the warning signs

Complete nonsense, any President has access to the launch codes by that guy who carries the 'football' and he carries a card on his person at all times.

He already has full access to any and all codes on demand 24/7

Just more hysteria spread by the uninformed.

Would be good to know who made these claims.

If you read the whole article by clicking on the link, you'd know. See below:

Miles Taylor is an American author, commentator, and former government official who served in the administrations of George W. Bush and Donald Trump. In the first Trump administration, he was an appointee in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from 2017 to 2019.

I did read the article. Mr taylor wrote the article he did not make the claim....maybe you need to go back and read the article.

'This week, a former CIA analyst claimed that during a tense Situation Room confrontation over Iran, Trump demanded access to the nuclear codes and had to be physically confronted by his most senior military adviser before backing down'.

It also says ths story has not been independently confirmed either.

Someone that insane and demented shouldn't be allowed to operate a microwave oven, much less have access to launch world ending nuclear weapons.

Get him out!

Perhaps you left out the proper context.

Perhaps Trump heard there's a Disney remake coming of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Trump is angling for the role of Sleepy. He's certainly got the chops for that role. Though Trump is a natural for Grumpy, he might be beat out by that guy on the far right. RFK, Jr is a shoe-in for Dopey.

Incidentally, Trump was up all night rage Tweeting, including a demand that the 2020 election be wiped from history and also that Barack Obama be charged with treason. I guess with such important matters as that, the old guy will grab 40 winks whenever he can.

The dude who carries the football should conveniently lose the daily codes--sorry, Sir, I don't know what happened to them!

is it not true that it takes 2 persons sets of codes to actually launch the doomsday missiles ?

The president has one set and a top military brass has to agree and provide the other set ?

He will just find a way around it like everything else. Turns out all those so called checks and balances the US was always mansplaining to the rest of the world about when trying to tell them the US is the best democracy ever, was all BS. All it took was one convicted felon con man with no morals to be elected president to prove it.
