You have to go to a hospital.

No need to go to a hospital. Any eye doc can tell you about cataracts & glaucoma

I was checked for both earlier this month. If in Hua Hin area, would recommend Dr. Pairat. He'll be doing one of my cataracts next month.

Not sure why Gmap states temporarily closed. Someone reviewed it just 2 days ago. I'm actually going there Tues, so will update if closed.

Guess who you go see in a hospital. Maybe a doctor?

So yes you also can go see a doctor in his private practice, which was actually the point the other poster made

Must have missed that, could you point that out ... THX

OP asked, not answered, just told, have to go to hospital by only reply before mine.

Reading comprehension really is a challenge for you.

You don't say. Why would anyone go to a hospital, other than to see a doctor?

Maybe you can tell us?

In short, the only purpose of your post was to have the last word................as always

When I used to have bi-annual eye tests in the UK they were always done by optometrists and always included cataract and glaucoma tests. But maybe things are different here.

Which will be in a hospital?

Any hospital will have, yes.

Some may have their own clinics as well - which may or may nto be adequately equipped for what you need.

And yet, first consultation (Optometrists) mine was not ... go figure.

My Ophthalmologist, seen at his clinic, will be doing my surgery, at hospital of course.

An Optometrists can also diagnose glaucoma and cataracts, as that's who/what diagnosed mine, first time. This might help you understand the differences in eye docs...

Not sure how many "Optometrists" are qualified or even have the equipment to test for glaucoma or cataracts in Thailand. Chains like Top Charoen seem to have only have staff who want to sell you the most expensive frames they have.

That why you research ever doc you plan on visiting. I've seen 3 at their clinics, and all could diagnose and treat, with at least one, perform surgery.

Generalizing ... 'have to go to hospital', was simply not accurate.

You seem to be referring to opthalmologists not optometrists.

Optometrists -- even "real" ones which is nto what you will usually find in a Thai shop selling eyeglasses - do nto do surgery.

I never stated they did surgery but they did have their own clinic and they did diagnose the cataracts and one offered treatment.

Did not ask the first one about treatment for the cataracts and of course didn't ask either one about surgery.

Saw the other doctor for surgery at his clinic.

I’m not sure how it is elsewhere, but in Thailand, optometrists mostly deal with eyesight and eyeglasses and can detect more serious eye health issues that need referral to an ophthalmologist.

Most, but not all, hospitals have ophthalmologists, and they can also be found in private clinics scattered around.

Don’t ask general Thais for an “ophthalmologist,” because it’s a mouthful and not a term most people will know—asking for an “eye doctor” is much easier to understand.

Have you been quoted a price yet?

Yea ... 2 ... 2 much. About same price as Rutnin eye hosp. at BKK 72k, and lucky me, need a special lens, so add 15k more ... ttl 87k. Doc leases space at BKK Hosp to do the surgery ... lucky me.

AI states HH govt hosp does it for ~30k, but don't know the doc and Q is silly long. I don't have the patience for govt hosp. any more. If true, that is a big chunk of saving.

I really do need to get it done ASAP, as waited too long already. As soon as done, I'm going to schedule the other eye to be done. Already prep to get done.

Then I got to follow up with a tooth implant. Expensive med year for me 🙄

Thanks for the info.

I have had 3 prices quoted from HH hosp.20, 40 and 50 k one eye with basic lens fitted

No one wants to commit to an honest price

Did they give you timeframe for the Q ?

And if you can pay for 'off hours' service, within a week or so. Did that for Endo & Colonoscopy at Chula @ BKK, as the Q was like 6+ months away.

Update on C surgery. Went pretty much as expected. Couple things I thought a bit overkill, but happy about them. Though a bit more, a lot more, 'uncomfortable' afterward, recovery time plus.

Overikill: trip from waiting area to operating theater, via wheelchair. It's C surgery, not back surgery. Same afterwards. Clothes off, their gown, slippers, hair net... again, eye surgery not brain surgery. Makes sense, as everything squeaky clean as infection, besides an oops is then only real danger. Surprised with the constant BP & PR being monitored, again, it's an eye.

Operation itself, painless, per se, cataract @ 80% so didn't see anything, a good thing. Strange head was NOT strapped down. Eye drops numbed and dilated eye, to point, if not @ 80%, probably wouldn't actually see the procedure anyway. Good eye not covered, but nothing really to, so remained close.

Could sense eye movement, and ultrasound cycling on & off, but nothing really to note.

Finished up, bandaged over, with hard shell patch. Arre laddies, batton down, release sails and hard starboard rudder.

Done, and the extremely uncomfortable part. Slid over to different bed, wheeled to outer from for about 30 mins recovery, wide awake, during & after. AND THEN IT IS WHT IT IS .... who squirted the chili sauce in my eye. BURN BABY BURN.

"Yea that happens, don't worry, it's not bad, it will pass soon"

The hell it isn't, and it's getting worse ... cheesy Can't flush it, can't rumb or scrath it,

F'me HELP.

All done, back in my clothes, cash out, no price change, 87k all in (72+15 for fancy lens), written on pre op consent. Wife stated only charged 86k. No need to pre pay, trusting.

"where you want to eat" ... Pharmacist, Diazepam (valiums). They gave me one 2mg pre op.

First stop, closest open pharmacist, 2 bubble packs of 7 tabs, for 2 weeks. Yea right, I munch 3 X 10mg flat out. OK now we can eat. Off to Blueport, < 10 mins way, Double Whopper, and before the first bite, all is beautiful again. V's are great, as the kick in almost immediately on an empty stomach.

All in all, a pleasant enough experience, except for paying. 100% success, want to cover for first day and wear hard patch overnight, so not to rub / scratch eye while sleeping.

Only advice, do NOT do what I did, and put it off, just get it done. Luckily, 100% removal, that advised, maybe not, since waited so long. So don't wait.

Great to here it went well.

Now all I need do is pull my finger out and dig into my piggy bank

When will you see (literally) the results? Also, how were your eyes prior to the op?

Results are instant, I guess. Well, after took the patch off the following day at docs office. less than 24 hrs after surgery. Surgery @ 1330 / 4th, doc visit 1100 / 5th, for check up & recap. Repatched till I got home on 5th, about 1700. Then I took it all off.

Given eye gauze and hard shell patch to cover eye when sleeping. I actually nodded off around 1900-0100, nothing on eye. Residual from Diazepam I guess. Don't remember waking/touching eye. Did tape the hard cap/patch back on, before falling asleep again, but didn't wake or remember touching the patch again while, so probably won't bother using again. No itching or desire to touch my eye at all.

Sight back to normal. There's a very slight film, blur still left on my eye, not cataract related. Simply due to age, and if wanting, can laser that off, in 6 months time. Not really seeing the need to, and if he didn't tell me, I wouldn't know it. Reading the eye chart at distance, it's only 1 line less than my right eye.

Was told about 3 yrs ago, had cataract, when checking up about floaters, and drops postponed cataract getting worse, faster. Although I did wait too long, and past couple months, cataract was starting to be annoying, though strangely not affecting me depth perception enough for me to stop driving. Simply blurring and distorting the outer left side of my vision.

If not told 3 yrs ago, I wouldn't have noticed myself, that I had cataracts till about a year ago. Which is when I should have had it done.

Only negative, as stated, was the stinging feeling, I guess the pressure of new lens settling in, and feels like chili juice, burning in my eye. Of course can't rinse it out, or touch or rub or anything. Lasted full 30 minutes in 'recovery', and while waiting to pay, and buying the Diazepam. 15 minutes after eating, started to kick in.

Next eye, I'll take 30mg of Diazepam, just before prepping for surgery, so should kick in just when he's done. Actual procedure takes < 30 mins, once initial cut made.

On the floaters that were in my left eye, and was expecting to see more without the cataract, since can actually see better. Must be doing something right in my diet that affected them, as actually hardly seen at all. Doc told me afterwards, I'd probably see more. Go figure.

Give it few months, let this lens settle in completely, then get the other eye done. That cataract, on right eye, is about 40% and mostly on one side, not obstructing my vision at all. If not told, wouldn't know it's there.
