cost of dialysis

Featured Replies

Hello there, theres coverage of dialysis on the health insuarance, but if one decides not to renew their insurance will it still be covered since dialysis needs weekly treatment forever right?

Suppose if one does not renew, can get the continuous treatement via social security health coverage?

Is there such things as organ transplant here in thailand? Seems its not covered under health insurance.

Can this be done via SS health coverage?

If you do not renew your health insurance then you will lose that coverage completely. And no new insurer will cover a pre-existing condition.

Organ transplants are done here but there is great shortage of donor organs and criteria are strict.

Are you covered by Thai Social Security through employment? If so, and if you either remain employed or continue contributions on your own then it will cover dialysis but you may be required to use peritoneal rather than hemodialysis, at least initially, and there are strict criteria for transplant eligibility. And of course care must be at designated SS hospital.

If you do not have SS cover now and are asking if you would automatically get it if you gave up private insurance the answer is no. In order to have SS cover you must either be spouse of a civil servant or have been legally employed in Thailand in a job which paid into SS. There is no way to get it otherwise,.

If you have private insurance and are now showing signs of renal failure it would be madness IMO to stop renewing the insurance.

Hi thanks for your detailed reply.

Suppose one was getting their treatment by private insurance but decides not to renew their policy,

And if he also has the Thai ss health coverage, is he eligible to transfer the treatment to different hospital under ss?

If he also has SS, he can get treatment at his nominated SS hospital (and only that one hospital, unless they refer him elsewhere) . But subject to SS criteria as previously explained. Which depending on specifics of his condition, might mean having to switch from hemodialysis to peritoneal dialysis etc.

Unless funds are so tight that there is little choice (and assuming it is good private insurance which has so far been paying claims) I would advise against someone in this situation cancelling private health insurance.

i see thanks for your advice.

Btw for this treatment needs to be continued till rest of his life?

is there other alternatives wo having to visit the hospital 3 times a week?

Yes, it is lifelong unless he receives a kidney transplant which few are able to do

Peritoneal dialysis can often be done at home if the patient is willing and there is a suitable caretaker. Hemodialysis requires hospital visits, typically 2-3 times a week.
