The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has identified 43 significant riverbank and canal erosion sites, impacting 555 households as the rainy season nears. The majority of these locations are in HCM City, with others in Bình Dương and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu provinces. Among these, eight areas are deemed extremely dangerous, including sections along Giồng Ông Tố and Thanh Đa Canals.

This situation arises from increasing erosion risks linked to illegal sand mining, water flow changes, and erratic rainfall. Efforts to mitigate the threat include ongoing embankment projects covering 17.9 km, with significant investment. Authorities stress the urgency of completing these projects and preparing for future risks by reinforcing unprotected areas, particularly those already flagged for high danger.

Officials are urging prompt action to ensure projects are smoothly executed and completed expeditiously. Agencies are tasked with enhancing public communication to help residents anticipate and counter erosion risks. Furthermore, local governments will monitor erosion patterns and promote community awareness about reducing loads on vulnerable riverbanks to minimize damage.

Efforts include stricter policing of illegal activities and violations along waterways. Essential infrastructure will be reviewed to maintain public safety as the rainy season advances. These steps aim to protect residents and mitigate the impacts of erosion across the affected regions.
