The Thai Long-Term Resident visa for Pensioners

Usually called the LTR-P or “Wealthy Pensioner” category — is a 10-year visa aimed at retirees aged 50+. It is administered by the Thai Board of Investment (BOI), not standard immigration. (LTR Visa Thailand)

The official BOI portal is:

Thailand LTR Visa Portal

Main requirements for the LTR-P (Wealthy Pensioner)

Age

You must be:

  • 50 years old or older at the time of application. (LTR Visa Thailand)

Income requirement

You need passive / unearned income, not salary.

Accepted income types include:

  • pensions

  • dividends

  • rental income

  • interest

  • realized investment gains

Standard route

You need:

  • USD 80,000+ per year passive income. (LTR Visa Thailand)

Lower-income route

If your passive income is:

  • between USD 40,000 and USD 79,999/year

then you must ALSO invest at least:

  • USD 250,000 in Thailand. (LTR Visa Thailand)

Acceptable Thai investments

The USD 250k investment can be one or a combination of:

  • Thai government bonds

  • direct investment in Thai companies

  • Thai property / condominium ownership (in your own name) (LTR Visa Thailand)

The investment generally must already exist before applying.

Health insurance / financial security requirement

You must have ONE of the following:

  • Health insurance with minimum coverage of USD 50,000

  • Thai social security coverage

  • OR a deposit of at least USD 100,000 in a bank account held for at least 12 months. (LTR Visa Thailand)

Many applicants reportedly use overseas insurance policies if they clearly show sufficient coverage. (Reddit)

Visa benefits

The LTR-P gives several advantages over the standard retirement visa:

  • 10-year visa (issued as 5 + 5 years)

  • annual reporting instead of 90-day reporting

  • multiple re-entry permit included

  • fast-track immigration lanes at airports

  • easier work permission for consulting/business activities

  • potential tax advantages on foreign-sourced income remitted into Thailand under current rules (LTR Visa Thailand)

Dependents

You can include:

  • spouse

  • children under 20

Maximum normally:

  • 4 dependents total. (LTR Visa Thailand)

Costs

Current government fee is approximately:

  • 50,000 THB per person for the visa issuance.
(Separate from insurance, legal help, translations, etc.) (Juslaws)

Application process

  1. Apply online through BOI

  2. Upload financial and supporting documents

  3. BOI reviews and issues qualification endorsement

  4. Visa issued either:

    • at a Thai embassy abroad

    • or at the One Stop Service Center in Bangkok. (Thai Embassy Austria)

Important practical point

The LTR-P is very different from the normal retirement visa (Non-O / O-A):

Feature

LTR-P

Standard Retirement Visa

Validity

10 years

1 year renewals

Financial test

USD income/investments

THB 800k bank or income

Reporting

Annual

Every 90 days

Work rights

Easier

Very limited

Target applicant

Wealthy retirees

General retirees

If you want, I can also explain:

  • how difficult approval actually is in practice

  • what documents retirees commonly struggle with

  • whether LTR-P is better than a standard retirement visa for your situation

  • tax implications for UK pensioners or investment income

  • whether your existing insurance would likely qualify.

I can explain it for you - but I can't understand it for you 😀
