Teens See Influencing and OnlyFans as Real Career Paths

Featured Replies

Summary:
A growing number of teenagers now view social media influencing and OnlyFans modeling as legitimate, accessible careers after high school. According to a 2023 Morning Consult report, 57% of Gen Z would choose influencing if given the chance, drawn by the low-barrier appeal of platforms like TikTok where simple, authentic content performs well.

Traditional dream jobs like doctor or athlete are losing ground. A 2021 YouGov study ranked professional streamer, vlogger, or YouTuber as the top aspiration for U.S. teens at 11%, ahead of more conventional professions.

The trend extends to adult content creation. A June 2025 study in Sexuality & Culture found that Spanish teens aged 12–16 are not only aware of OnlyFans but see it as an attractive professional option, especially for girls who fit conventional beauty standards. Researchers noted teens understand the platform’s business model and view it as a path to financial independence.

Experts link this shift to widespread teen burnout. High academic pressure and stress make traditional routes like college or entry-level jobs feel overwhelming. Many teens seek quicker, more rewarding paths that promise creative freedom and fast income. While some creators succeed financially, psychologists highlight risks: developing teen brains struggle with long-term consequences, impulse control, and privacy issues tied to online content.

Parents are encouraged to have open, non-judgmental conversations about career options rather than dismissing these interests outright. Understanding the appeal — similar to past generations chasing Hollywood dreams — can help guide teens toward informed decisions.

Key Takeaways

  • Influencing is mainstream: Over half of Gen Z sees content creation as a viable career, boosted by accessible platforms like TikTok.

  • OnlyFans is on the radar: Even younger teens (12–16) view adult content creation as a realistic, lucrative option.

  • Burnout drives the shift: Academic pressure pushes teens toward “easier” digital careers, making open parent-teen discussions essential.

Kids today are more realistic!

I can't think of any worthwhile career I would want to take up as a teen these days.

High paying lifetime jobs in in media/journalism/television have all gone, STEM is all low wage jobs aimed at Indians, even doctors are often immigrants from India and Eastern Europe.

"Mummy and Daddy. I want to be a slutty porn-star when I grow up. I hear I can make great money working on my back. All I need you to do is to forge my birth certificate so that I'm 18 instead of 13 and then I can start my career journey by flashing pedophiles on web sites that appeal to mentally sick perverts." sad

Western civilization, if you can call it "civilized," is degrading just like the Roman Empire. It should be no surprise that some people wish to emigrate to conservative countries like Russia and China which socially supports family instead of feminism.

Poor parenting

It wasn't that long ago that a lot of teeny boppers were drawn to a life of flying around to exotic islands with rich guys for a living.

Sad but true when it comes to one in our family that is now in the mid 20's. Just refuses to take on a mundane job for 40 hours a week so has no skills at all.
