Thailand Rolls Out New Nationwide Alcohol Restrictions

Thailand has introduced eight new alcohol regulations after they were published in the Royal Gazette on May 12. The new rules restrict alcohol sales and consumption across transport areas, public spaces, factories, government-controlled locations, and state enterprise properties. Alcohol sales are now banned on roads, vehicles, trains, train stations, passenger piers, ferry terminals, and public transport stations, with limited exceptions for specific events. Factories are also covered by the restrictions, although liquor production sites may still sell alcohol as part of normal operations and allow tasting during production. The changes update alcohol control rules first introduced in 2008, while Thailand continues wider debate over tourism-related alcohol policy reforms.
