Chinese Passenger Accused of Damaging Suvarnabhumi Immigration Gates

A Chinese passenger was arrested after allegedly damaging automated passport control gates at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Police said the incident happened in the outbound immigration area on May 13, when the man reportedly kicked two gates and forced his way through without authorisation. Immigration officers also accused him of shouting insults at officials and attempting to confront them physically before his wife intervened. The damaged equipment was estimated to cost around 481,500 baht, excluding VAT. The suspect now faces complaints related to insulting officials on duty and damaging government property.

Perhaps he could try the same act on arrival or departure at a Chinese airport.

I'm guessing the officias would not be laughing.

Watching the video shows he was unhappy when slapping his passport down. Angry chinese like to have tantrums and destroy stuff.

He must have believed the propaganda of the power of the Chinese passport.

How do they state numbers like this with a straight face? A tech will be there within the hour and fix the gate for less than the price of a Nana barfine.

When gates are installed there's a service agreement with a qualified company. Ask a gate repair tech the next time you see one working at a public transit location. In Vancouver we used Western Scale. Drug addicts broke through the gates several times per day and the broken gates were repaired within hours and it sure as hell didn't cost 20 grand CAD per pop. I'd wager that the cost in Vancouver is even less than a Nana barfine.

A service agreement costs money. Destruction by someone is mostly not covered by a service agreement. Are the systems the same? What you wager is of no value. Come up with actual costs.

Well considering you are the one spouting in the first place, let me ask you

What company manufactured the gates

what company installed the gates

are the gates custom for Thailand

what parts of the gate were damaged

what parts damaged are off the shelf or custom. Did you know a gate servo alone can be $2500 (90,000B) or more?

what are the terms of the service contract, if any

how is the gate installed and replaced in terms of security

Let me note I dont care what the gate cost, or even if its a rip off because I didnt break it, some scumbag did. It is annoying though to watch you join the ranks of those who pontificate out of their excretory valve.

I agree.. It’s not cheap.. true, the exact specifics of the unit aren’t known, nor how extensive is the damage and the process to either repair or replace said parts, plus the labor etc., that’s part and parcel of the larger process.

I tend to believe that their publicly declared costs are most likely what they are or are reasonable ballpark estimate. Another consideration is that due the nature of the damage - public property damaged while in commission of a crime by a non-citizen - the government doesn’t have a lot of motivation to intentionally keep costs low, purposely low ball it etc. and they have a reasonably good chance of being “made whole” anyway.

If it's for government use, then should this expenditure not be tax exempt?

On the other hand.....

It might be argued that the extremely slow computer-controlled gate, and the extreme lag time......

Is a major factor in adding to traveler stress.

If I must pass through some computer gate, one where the timing is unknown, then I will not travel.

$35,000 a lane in the USA.

Immigration officer got really upset at a Chinese woman in front of me as there is a sign "take passport out of cover" with a picture and this woman still had the cover on when she presented it.

"You, stand over there"! Chinese woman and man had to wait while loads of us went by, it was a really long queue. Didn't see when they were allowed to continue, but saw they were really upset.

No worries....

The Chinese will, one day.....soon....have their day.

And then, the world will be kowtowing to the Chinese, for a change...

It's not laggy, it is just as quick as anywhere else. And it is much quicker than going to an IO.

But if you don't want to travel that's fine with most of us.

It sound rather high but in Suvarnabhumi they use high-spec gates (likely Vision-Box or similar). AOT can't just have a local tech "check" it. They have to pay for a certified engineer from the manufacturer to fly in or come out, run a full diagnostic, and sign off that the gate is once again a "Secure Border Channel."
