Israel tightens grip on Gaza as ceasefire frays

Israel is steadily expanding the territory it controls inside Gaza despite a ceasefire agreement that was supposed to reduce military pressure on the enclave. The move is deepening fears that temporary security zones are becoming permanent facts on the ground as diplomacy stalls and humanitarian conditions deteriorate.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this week that Israeli forces now control 60 per cent of Gaza, a striking admission that underlines how dramatically the battlefield map has shifted since the ceasefire was brokered in late 2025.

The ‘Temporary’ Line That Keeps Moving

Under the ceasefire deal, a so-called “Yellow Line” was established to divide Israeli-controlled territory from the rest of Gaza. The arrangement was presented as a temporary military measure while negotiations continued.

But reports now point to a rapidly expanding fortified zone. Satellite analysis cited by Israeli media shows new outposts, reinforced positions and fresh infrastructure spreading across the line. Palestinian residents and aid groups say the boundary has repeatedly shifted deeper into Gaza with little warning.

The Israeli military insists troop deployments remain consistent with operational requirements and the terms of the truce. Yet on the ground, the reality appears increasingly permanent.

Civilians Squeezed Between Frontlines

Humanitarian organisations warn the expanding zone is placing enormous pressure on civilians already displaced by months of war. Aid workers say families are waking up to discover areas previously considered safe have suddenly become military zones.

According to UN figures cited in reports, hundreds of Palestinians have allegedly been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire began, including many near the Yellow Line. Gaza’s shrinking civilian space is now becoming one of the conflict’s central flashpoints.

“There have been situations where Palestinians were killed when they approached the yellow line,” said Louise Le Bret of the Danish Refugee Council.

Peace Talks Stall as Settler Pressure Grows

The territorial expansion is also complicating already fragile negotiations over Gaza’s future. Talks remain deadlocked over demands for Hamas disarmament and Israel’s insistence on maintaining security control.

At the same time, some Israeli settler groups are openly pushing for civilian settlements inside the newly controlled areas. Defence Minister Israel Katz has previously suggested Israel could maintain a long-term presence in Gaza, fuelling fears that the ceasefire is slowly being overtaken by a new territorial reality.
