President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae are set to enhance defense and maritime cooperation during Marcos’ state visit to Tokyo. Scheduled from May 26 to 29, the discussions aim to strengthen operational collaboration and support the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), focusing on security and defense.

Ahead of the visit, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Spokesperson Analyn Ratonel outlined plans for increased information sharing and defense equipment transfer between the nations. Key topics include the implementation of existing defense agreements, such as the Reciprocal Access Agreement signed in 2024 and the 2026 deal for reciprocal supplies and services provision.

The DFA emphasizes these agreements as essential for joint military operations, training, and disaster response efforts. Additionally, the Philippines seeks continued Japanese support for its defense modernization initiatives.

Beyond defense, energy resilience, decarbonization, trade, investments, and human resources are also on the agenda. The talks may lead to new agreements in these areas, including Japan's "Power Asia" initiative, a $10-billion program aimed at enhancing renewable energy diversification in Asia.

Regional and global issues, like Indo-Pacific security and the Middle East crisis, will also be addressed. This visit marks Marcos’ first official trip to Japan since taking office and coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations normalization between the two countries.

Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos will be received by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, who will host a state banquet in their honor. Additionally, the President will engage with Japanese business leaders and the Filipino community in Japan.
