Nicola Sturgeon’s estranged husband jailed over SNP cash scandal

The estranged husband of former Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon has admitted embezzling more than £400,000 from the Scottish National Party in a dramatic collapse of one of the most powerful political partnerships in modern Scottish history.

Peter Murrell, the party’s former chief executive, pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh on Monday before being remanded into custody.

Cash Meant For Independence Drive Diverted

Murrell, 62, admitted siphoning off party funds that had been earmarked for Scotland’s independence campaign.

The court heard the money was spent on luxury goods, vehicles and a motorhome as questions mounted over the handling of more than £600,000 donated by supporters for future referendum campaigning.

The guilty plea marks the biggest development yet in the long-running Police Scotland investigation that has hung over the SNP since 2023.

Sturgeon Cleared — But Political Damage Lingers

Sturgeon herself was cleared of wrongdoing last year after being arrested and questioned during the probe. Former SNP treasurer Colin Beattie was also cleared.

But the scandal cast a long shadow over the party and over Sturgeon’s final years in office. Her surprise resignation as first minister came amid mounting internal tensions and growing scrutiny of the SNP’s finances.

Murrell and Sturgeon later announced the breakdown of their marriage after roughly 15 years together.

SNP Faces Reckoning After Years Of Dominance

For more than a decade, Sturgeon transformed the SNP into the dominant force in Scottish politics, leading the party through elections, Brexit turmoil and the Covid pandemic.

Yet the embezzlement scandal has badly damaged the party’s reputation at a time when support for Scottish independence has stalled and public trust has weakened.

The case also raises wider questions about governance and oversight inside one of Britain’s most tightly controlled political operations.

Murrell’s conviction now closes one chapter of the investigation — but for the SNP, the political fallout is unlikely to end anytime soon.

What happened.......

'Darlin Nichola, what do yer think of this wee motorhome I found parked outside? Won't it be grand for touring the Highlands.

And how about this wee pen for £4,225 I found under the office desk at Holyrood? Great for signing the Declaration of Independence from the Auld Enemy.'

' Crivens Penfold! You have the luck of the Irish'.

He was a man under the thumb, she wore the trousers.
Of course she knew and found the ideal patsy to take the fall.

Former Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon is facing mounting demands to explain what she knew about the embezzlement scandal engulfing the SNP after her estranged husband admitted stealing more than £400,000 from the party.

Peter Murrell pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh to using party funds to bankroll a lavish lifestyle, buying a luxury motorhome, cars, watches and high-end goods while serving as the SNP’s powerful chief executive.

Luxury Spending Sparks Fury

Murrell, 61, admitted embezzling party money over more than a decade while he and Sturgeon sat at the top of Scottish politics.

Court documents detailed spending on a £124,550 motorhome, a Jaguar I-Pace, luxury fountain pens, designer watches and thousands of pounds worth of household items. Prosecutors said false invoices and accounting codes were used to disguise the purchases.

Judge Lord Young described the offences as a “gross breach of trust” before Murrell was led away in handcuffs and remanded in custody ahead of sentencing next month.

‘Nobody Believes She Knew Nothing’

The guilty plea immediately intensified scrutiny on Sturgeon, who signed off SNP accounts as party leader while sharing a home and finances with Murrell.

Scottish Labour deputy leader Jackie Baillie said it was “inconceivable” Sturgeon knew nothing about the fraud. Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay accused her of making “preposterous protestations of ignorance”.

Critics pointed to the scale of the purchases and the years-long operation inside the party machine as pressure mounted for further answers.

SNP Faces Political Reckoning

The scandal threatens fresh damage to the SNP just weeks after the party secured another Holyrood election victory and renewed calls for a second independence referendum.

Operation Branchform — the £2 million police investigation into SNP finances — began after concerns emerged over more than £600,000 raised for an independence campaign that never materialised.

Former SNP figures now claim internal warnings were ignored or shut down. Joanna Cherry said those raising concerns were branded “traitors” by party loyalists.

Sturgeon Denies Any Knowledge

Sturgeon insists she had “no knowledge or suspicion whatsoever” that SNP money was being used for personal purchases.

In statements released after the hearing, she said she was “angry, hurt, sad and very distressed”, adding that Murrell’s actions were “beyond my comprehension”.

But politically, the questions are no longer fading. For the SNP, the crisis that once lurked in the background has exploded back into the centre of Scottish public life.

Nicola Sturgeon has fiercely defended herself after her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, admitted embezzling more than £400,000 from the SNP — insisting she should not be blamed for "the wrongdoing of men".

The former Scottish first minister spoke out at the Hay Festival in Wales on Friday, just days after Murrell, 61, pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh. The dramatic admission marked a stunning development in a scandal that has rocked Scottish politics.

Sturgeon, 55, said she had faced intense scrutiny in the wake of Murrell's guilty plea. She pointedly noted that her image had appeared on more Scottish newspaper front pages this week than her former husband's.

"My picture has been on more front pages in Scotland this week than my former husband’s has, and I don’t think that’s right," she told the audience.

Murrell admitted embezzling more than £400,000 from the SNP between 2010 and 2022 while serving as the party's chief executive. The money was spent on luxury purchases including two cars, a motorhome, jewellery and cosmetics.

He has since been remanded in custody.

Sturgeon has consistently denied any knowledge of the crimes and was never charged following a lengthy police investigation into SNP finances.

Addressing the fallout, she said the reaction reflected an old assumption that women must somehow share responsibility when men commit wrongdoing.

"It is the age-old cry of when a man does something wrong, well, the woman must have known about it, somehow it’s her fault," she said.

The former SNP leader revealed she had received messages from women who had experienced betrayal by their husbands. She said many had contacted her to offer solidarity during what has become an extraordinarily difficult period in her life.

Sturgeon insisted she has no intention of retreating from public life despite the storm surrounding the case.

"I’ve done nothing wrong. So I’m not going to hide away. And that’s why I’m here," she said.

The political veteran also laid bare the personal toll the scandal has taken. Speaking at a literary festival in Ireland on Thursday, she described the situation as the "worst week of my life".

She repeated that assessment at Hay Festival, saying that while she had endured difficult periods before, this week had surpassed them all.

Sturgeon said she was still coming to terms with the revelation that the man she had been married to for many years was not the person she believed him to be.

She described Murrell as someone who had "misled" her, "deceived" her and "lied" to her, adding that his actions had placed her in "considerable peril".

The backdrop to her comments stretches back to 2023, when she was arrested and questioned by Police Scotland during its investigation into SNP finances. Officers also searched the home she shared with Murrell.

However, she was released without charge and is no longer under investigation.

Away from the scandal, Sturgeon also used her appearance to criticise what she sees as shortcomings within the progressive left. She argued that too many politicians appear unwilling to stand firmly for their beliefs.

"If you’re not in politics because you’ve got a vision of a better society and a better country and a better world, you shouldn’t be in politics at all," she said.

She also reflected on the five UK prime ministers she worked alongside during her time in office. Sturgeon said David Cameron was the one she liked best, Theresa May was the one she respected most, and joked that she "blinked and missed" Liz Truss.

Her sharpest criticism was reserved for Boris Johnson. Sturgeon said they were "not a match made in heaven" and argued he never should have come close to occupying Downing Street.
