Jewish and Muslim children’s summer camps

This came to mind when I was considering the differences between a yeshiva and a madrasa. As with all education, both can be used for broadening the minds of the young within the contexts of their cultures or for base indoctrination and encouragement to extremism.

There has been some discussion on AN about the Canada Revenue Agency withdrawing charitable status from Jewish summer camps.

Why did I support this initiative and sign this letter? Canada is for Canadians, to encourage the Canadian values of peacemaking and peacebuilding. Negotiation, conciliation, compromise has been our international image since WWII.

We don’t have summer camps for children to learn to love France or Somaliland and wave their flags. Nor do we have soldiers from those countries come to Canada to represent those them.

Thus, I see Zionism as anti-Canadian. It is not teaching Jewish history, culture and practices, it is importing Israeli soldiers to represent a foreign state to Canadian children.

I admit it would be hard to import any Israeli who is not or will not or has been an IDF soldier. But what those soldier-counselors are doing is teaching nationalism.

At least some of these children with Jewish matrilineage have the opportunity to become Israelis. Mazel tov! I have no objection to children learning any language to make communication possible in other countries and culture.

But Israeli nationalism is tied inextricably to their society’s culture of war and hypermilitarism.

Sorry, I don’t want violence taught to kids who might be my neighbour’s kids or go to school with my kids and thus infect my kids with war. That’s ZDS.

I doubt that Hamas or Hezbollah extremists are invited to Muslim summer camps.

So why should IDF soldiers be teaching our children allegiance to a foreign flag?

If Zionists want to import counselors, bring Israeli conscientious objectors--refuseniks--to teach peace instead of war.

This also is kind of sick. I really did wonder what happened to the hijackers' airmiles from 911!

Froggy, as an activist, I've always tried to pick issues I thought I could influence. I guess I feel I know more about Jews than, say, Ukrainians. Dunno, maybe I somehow identify with Jews or was a Jew in my last life.

I woke up with a pit of horror after hearing about Oct 7. But when the situation was reversed and Jews were perpetrating the same atrocities, that horror just didn't disappear for me. I wake up every day considering what I could do or say to save the innocents.

Or maybe I'm just a stalker!
