Refused entry at a Thai airport, even with a tourist visa?

Featured Replies

In 2025, I spent nine months in Thailand: 3 months × 3, the first time on a visa, the second and third times with an exemption.

Then I went to Vietnam for 2 months, then came back on a visa, in January.

At DMK airport, the immigration officer told me I had spent a lot of time in Thailand in 2025 and called someone over: I found myself sitting 10 metres away giving my fingerprints again, it took a minute, no remarks or questions, I was given 60 days.

I had the 60 days extended by 30 days without any problem, then left for Vietnam where I rented accommodation for 90 days.

Unfortunately, due to extremely noisy construction work that is planned, I have to cut my stay short to 60 days. I have two options: find another 30-day rental in Vietnam, or return to Thailand early (on a 60-day tourist visa).

1.a) Has anyone been refused entry in Bangkok with a visa recently?

1.b) In Chiang Mai?

Whether I come back at the end of June or end of July, from early 2026 there was talk of the 30-day extension now being granted only once a year, with the second one limited to 7 days (which was the only extension available when I arrived in Thailand in 2005, and the fee was already 1,900 baht).

From what I've read, it's not clear whether this limitation of the second extension to only 7 days applies to everyone or only to people arriving without a visa.

2.) Does anyone have an experience to share that matches mine? A second 30-day extension in 2026 after two visa entries (I'm aware that in June it's a bit early to find that kind of experience — the further into the year, the easier it will be to find).

Thank you!

P.S. Unrelated: AirAsia flight Bangkok–Hanoi in April 2026, DMK airport: no request or check for a return ticket. Same at Hanoi on arrival.

Even with a visa entry can be refused.

As for limit of 30 day extensions that possible on visa exempt entry.

Entry with a SETV you would be able to obtain a 30 day extension to each visa permission of stay

Eventually you need a better plan.

Under 50 ....I assume.

Many foreigners are refused entry with METV's and SETV's.

That has, several years ago admittedly, included me.

The official Immigration video that states the importance of a "correct visa" highlights Non-Immigrant Visas and Destination Thailand Visas as "correct visas". Please note METV's and SETV's are omitted from this list.

there is no guarantee of entry to any country, however, if you follow the immigration rules and visa rules for a particular country the chances of being refused entry are extremely low.

What rules are those

Your recent history as a tourist in Thailand is towards the "extremely long-term" end.

A tourist visa won't guarantee entry. I'd say you're a prime candidate for using a safe entry service.

Agree.

Also the usual suspects have been trying to stay in Thailand ongoing using visa exempt + tourist visas.

Even if other options available such as Non O with extensions

No. Not for Thailand.

For example entry via air visa exempt.

There are no clearly defined rules but rather "at the discretion of the io"

It would be simple to have clearly defined rules. They opt not to.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they stopped you. You have been spending more time in Thailand than a “normal “ tourist, but nobody knows 100% for sure. You might get lucky, or you might not be. I suggest you get a proper visa for the amount of time you are spending in Thailand. Everything is changing daily or weekly now, so it’s up to you if you want to roll the dice. We are all in the wait and see phase.

Simple solution.

Then fly into Thailand for a 30-day visa.

Clearly defined rules or not immigration officers around the world have the right to refuse entry to prospective visitors.

I give up. Have a nice day.

OP, use a safe entry service. A few thousand bahts is cheaper than your trip being canceled by an IO and sent back at your own cost.

Peace Of mind...

Consider that your first and possibly last warning about your extended stays in the Kingdom.

It's obvious to both us and then that you are not a bonafide tourist, so trying entry again the same way is just asking for trouble

You need to get your ducks in a row before trying to enter again.

Yes, many have been refused entry at DMB, BKK and CNX
