A brief court appearance by a prominent Gaza doctor has renewed international calls for his release after more than 17 months in Israeli detention.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, appeared before Israel's Supreme Court via video link as judges considered whether to extend his detention.

Images from the hearing quickly spread online, showing the 53-year-old doctor handcuffed and wearing white prison clothing.

Video Appearance Draws Attention

Observers said Abu Safiya appeared noticeably thinner and paler than before his arrest.

Footage circulating on social media appeared to show marks on his arms, while clips from inside the courtroom showed officials interrupting the video feed as supporters attempted to view the proceedings.

According to his lawyer, Abu Safiya used the hearing to challenge what he described as his continued arbitrary detention.

Israel has held the doctor since late 2024 but has not formally charged him with a criminal offence.

Hospital Director Became Symbol Of Gaza Crisis

Abu Safiya became widely known during the war after repeatedly documenting conditions at Kamal Adwan Hospital while Israeli forces operated in northern Gaza.

Throughout an extended military siege of the facility, he issued video appeals describing shortages of medicine, fuel and medical supplies.

One of the most widely shared moments came after his son was killed near the hospital during the conflict.

At the time, the doctor described burying his son in the hospital grounds while continuing to treat patients.

Israel Says Investigation Continues

Israeli authorities have said Abu Safiya is being investigated over alleged links to Hamas.

The Israeli military has maintained that it suspects him of cooperating with or working for the militant organisation.

However, medical colleagues, aid groups and human rights organisations have strongly disputed those allegations and continue to call for his release.

The Israeli Prison Service has rejected claims that he is being mistreated, stating that all detainees receive appropriate medical care and that complaints are investigated through official channels.

Rights Groups Raise Concerns

According to Physicians for Human Rights–Israel, Abu Safiya was recently moved into solitary confinement.

The organisation says he is one of several Gaza medical professionals still being held in Israeli prisons.

His family and supporters argue that his detention has become symbolic of the broader pressures facing Gaza's medical community during the conflict.

War Continues To Cast Long Shadow

The case comes as the war that began after Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel continues to generate fierce international debate over humanitarian conditions, detainees and military operations.

For supporters of Abu Safiya, the brief glimpse of the doctor inside an Israeli courtroom has only intensified demands for greater transparency over his detention and for a resolution to his case.

Whether Israel's courts ultimately uphold his continued imprisonment or order a change in his status remains to be seen.
