Trump family cashes in as Albanian resort plan sparks revolt

A remote Albanian island has become the latest flashpoint in the debate over Donald Trump’s growing business empire, with thousands protesting plans by his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner to build a luxury resort on one of the Adriatic’s last untouched stretches of coastline.

The £1bn-plus project on Sazan Island has triggered a political storm, raising fresh questions about how far the Trump family’s commercial interests can expand while Trump remains in the White House.

Paradise Island Turns Political Battleground

Sazan Island sits at the entrance to the Bay of Vlorë, surrounded by turquoise waters and largely protected from development by unexploded Second World War munitions beneath its coastline.

Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner want to transform the 3,500-acre island into a high-end tourism destination featuring eco-homes and luxury hotels. But opponents say the project threatens a fragile environment and has moved forward without meaningful public consultation.

Thousands have taken to the streets of Tirana in recent days, turning what might have been a local planning dispute into a broader challenge to the Trump family’s global business ambitions.

The Billion-Pound Brand Expansion

The Albanian project is just one part of a much larger expansion. Since Trump returned to office, the family has pursued ventures spanning property, cryptocurrency and international development projects.

Analysts estimate the family has generated billions through a mix of real-estate deals, digital assets and overseas investments. New projects have emerged across Europe, the Middle East and Asia as the Trump name continues to attract investors seeking access, influence or commercial opportunity.

Cracks Emerging Beneath the Success

Yet resistance is growing. An £800m Trump-branded hotel and tower project on Australia’s Gold Coast collapsed last month after local developers reportedly concluded the brand had become politically toxic.

Brand experts argue Trump’s political power remains a major asset, particularly among loyal supporters and business interests benefiting from his policies. But they also warn that political volatility creates uncertainty that many investors dislike.

Questions Over Power and Profit Intensify

Critics argue the scale of the Trump family’s business activity during his second term is unprecedented in modern American politics. Historians and watchdog groups point to a growing overlap between political influence and private commercial gain.

Supporters dismiss those claims as politically motivated attacks on a successful business family. But as protests spread from Albania to other international projects, scrutiny is intensifying.

For now, Sazan Island has become more than a luxury development. It is a test of whether the Trump brand remains unstoppable—or whether public resistance is finally beginning to catch up with it.

Albania offers generous visa-free stays for Americans.

Don't overlook this up and coming gem of the Balkans folks.

Yes one year for just showing up for Americans.

However, after that, you need to leave for three months before a reset.

So not as good as Georgia for many nationalities giving a full year and reset after a visa run.

Albania does have a retirement visa which can lead to permanent residence.

Georgia does seem the better option. Heck, they invented wine, how cool is that!

Apparently the laptop bros, Benidorm Brits and yoga istas haven't smothered the place yet...

Not happened in Albania either.

Georgia is a little complicated.

The massive wave of Russian "draft dodgers" to Georgia early in the war changed the real estate market in Tbilisi dramatically making it much less affordable. That hasn't happened in Tirana yet. Also of course Georgia borders Russia, Russia continues to occupy a large chunk of Georgia, and the current Georgian government is resisting the will of the people to move towards Europe and away from Russia.

But yes great food and wine.

If I were to invest money, it would be in Albania vs. Georgia hands down.

Thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Tirana on Saturday in the biggest demonstration yet against a controversial luxury resort linked to Donald Trump’s family, turning a local planning dispute into a full-blown political showdown.

What began as opposition to a coastal development has rapidly evolved into a wider revolt against Prime Minister Edi Rama, with demonstrators vowing to remain on the streets until he steps down.

From Beachfront Project to National Flashpoint

The protests erupted after construction activity appeared near Zvernec, a protected area within the Vjosa-Narta nature reserve on Albania’s southern coast.

The proposed luxury resort is linked to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner and has become a lightning rod for allegations of secrecy and cronyism. Critics accuse the government of pushing ahead with major developments without sufficient public scrutiny.

On Saturday, protesters waved Albanian and American flags as they marched through the capital. Giant projections reading “Albania is not for sale” lit up government buildings as anger spilled into the streets.

Crowds Swell as Diaspora Joins Fight

The demonstration drew support from Albanians travelling home from abroad, significantly boosting turnout and giving the movement fresh momentum.

Protesters say their concerns extend beyond the hotel itself. Many argue the controversy reflects deeper frustrations over governance, transparency and public accountability.

“We are not against development,” said student protester Alma. “We are against the arrogance and lack of transparency surrounding projects that affect our lives.”

Rama Refuses to Back Down

Despite mounting pressure, Rama has shown no sign of retreat.

Addressing party supporters earlier on Saturday, the prime minister dismissed calls for his resignation and argued that the involvement of Kushner and the Trump name had fuelled international attention.

His defiance is unlikely to calm tensions. Protest organisers have already pledged further demonstrations in the coming days.

Environmental Stakes Raise the Pressure

The dispute has also drawn environmental concerns. The proposed developments are located near one of the region’s most important habitats for migratory birds, including large flamingo populations.

Scientists and conservationists warn that the area represents one of Albania’s most valuable ecosystems. With political pressure rising and public anger intensifying, the battle over a single coastal resort is fast becoming a test of the government’s authority.
