UK: Train Driver Killed And Scores Injured In Bedford Rail Disaster

A train driver has been killed and dozens of passengers injured after two East Midlands Railway services collided near Bedford on Thursday evening in one of Britain's worst rail accidents in recent years.

Emergency services rushed to the scene south of Bedford after the crash occurred at around 5.15pm near Elstow interchange, close to the A421 and A6.

British Transport Police confirmed one person had died. The victim was later identified as train driver David Calfe, with the announcement made by Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan.

Massive Emergency Response

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue, multiple ambulance crews, air ambulances and police units descended on the crash site as rescuers worked to reach trapped and injured passengers.

The trains involved were confirmed as the 4.40pm East Midlands Railway service from Corby to London St Pancras and the 3.50pm Nottingham to London St Pancras service.

Aerial images from the scene showed heavily damaged carriages, with at least one carriage forced off the tracks following the impact.

Dozens Hurt In Collision

Health Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed a large number of people had been injured.

Officials said 11 people suffered very serious injuries, while a further 22 sustained serious injuries. Another 56 passengers were treated for minor injuries.

Hospitals across the region were placed on standby as emergency teams carried out triage operations at the scene.

Passengers Describe Chaos

Survivors spoke of terrifying scenes inside the trains following the collision.

Passenger Peter Knapp, who was travelling in the front carriage of one of the trains, described being thrown forward by the force of the crash.

"There was a moment of being flung into the chair in front, and then I saw smoke," he told the BBC.

"People were crying, screaming. People were so scared and confused."

Knapp said he witnessed passengers suffering severe injuries, including broken legs, while others were left unable to speak following the impact.

Investigation Under Way

Rail accident investigators and transport officials have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The cause of the collision remains unknown.

Tributes have already begun pouring in for driver David Calfe, while questions are expected to be raised over how two passenger services came to collide on one of Britain's busiest rail corridors.

The line remains closed as investigators work through the wreckage and emergency crews continue recovery operations.
