Britain Develops Cheap Long-Range Missile For Ukraine Free Of US Control

The United Kingdom is developing a new generation of low-cost long-range weapons for Ukraine that would operate without any American-made components or reliance on US intelligence data, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The project, known as Project Brakestop, was launched in late 2024 and is aimed at rapidly delivering affordable strike weapons capable of hitting targets deep behind enemy lines while reducing dependence on Washington.

Built Without US Parts Or Data

British officials say a central requirement of the program is complete operational independence from the United States.

The weapons being developed would contain no US-made components and would not require American satellite data or targeting information. The move reflects growing concern among European governments about relying too heavily on US defense supply chains and political decisions.

Three British firms — MBDA, MGI Engineering and Rotron Aerospace — are currently competing to produce the system.

Cheaper Alternative To Storm Shadow

The new weapons are designed as a lower-cost alternative to the powerful Storm Shadow cruise missile already supplied to Ukraine.

While officials acknowledge the new missiles will likely be less accurate and carry less destructive power than Storm Shadow, they are expected to cost roughly half as much.

Each missile is projected to cost around £400,000 ($530,000) before the warhead is added.

Range Over 500 Kilometres

The proposed weapons would carry warheads weighing at least 225 kilograms and strike targets at ranges exceeding 500 kilometres (310 miles).

Unlike Storm Shadow, the new systems are expected to be launched from the ground rather than aircraft.

Officials said they are intended for attacks against military facilities, logistics hubs and infrastructure targets rather than deeply buried bunkers.

Production Could Begin Within A Year

Testing is expected to take place in both Britain and Ukraine in the coming months.

If trials prove successful and a contract is awarded, British officials believe the selected weapon could enter operational service within approximately one year.

The competing companies have reportedly told the government they could produce at least 40 missiles per month within three to four months of receiving an order.

Europe Expands Independent Strike Capabilities

The program highlights a wider European push to develop weapons systems outside American control.

According to Bloomberg, if the British government does not proceed with a contract, the companies may seek to sell the missiles directly to Ukraine or to European governments looking to strengthen Kyiv's long-range strike capabilities.

The development comes as several European nations explore independent missile programs amid growing uncertainty over future US military support and concerns about maintaining strategic autonomy in any future conflict.
