I thought I'd post this in case it helps others in the same position........

As of last Sunday morning, my ADSL (TOT in Chiang Mai) just stopped working. I checked all the physical and system set-up, ran the router's (ZyXel) "Configuration Genie" numerous times - all to no result and just could not get a connection. Called the helpline number and got the "busy" message a dozen times (and "This number is out of service" once :o ). Finally got through and described the fault - they said they would check the line. Engineer called me 2 days running to ask if I could now connect to the internet (no) and finally came out to my house today. He checked the same things I had, ran some diagnostics and called his base to get them to check some other things - as a result of which he decided that it was a problem with the DSL port at the local box up the road after heavy rain at the weekend. He went there to switch my line to a different port and called me from there to get me to try and connect. Still no joy - although I was now getting more lights on the router. He came back and after much perplexed head-scratching, decided to try his username and password on my set-up. Result - success.

Diagnosis - the DSL port problem (assumed to be caused by rain damage at the local box) had in turn corrupted/blocked my username and password set-up on the TOT system........ 2 problems for the price of one.

So, given that this is the rainy season and particularly if you're out in the sticks, if you get a similar issue and your ISP engineer is puzzled........ could be that the same thing has happened on your set-up.

As postscript, while I wish TOT had been a tad quicker getting out to me, I have to say that I was relieved that the stories I'd heard about TOT's poor service performance weren't borne out by my experience of it this time :D .

That happened to me when TOT let me try gold-business for a while.

I thought it was nice of them to let me try before you buy - they said they'd switch me to gold biz soon and give me a call. They did switch me, but they didn't give me a call, and also didn't inform the local TOT brigade,so my connection mysteriously went down, TOT brigade arrived, scratched heads for a while, left, and I finally tried user name xxxx@goldbiz instead of goldcyber, and bingo the connection was back.

Needless to say Gold biz turned out to be just as unreliable as gold cyber so I switched back. I happened to not be here and the ppl tending the house called TOT, who once again had not been informed of the change so the whole thing repeated backwards.

TIT :o

One thing that you can rely on with my local TOT guys is that they will never, ever call in advance. Even if they promise to, they never do. They just show up at the house and if nobody's home they leave. They seem to have real trouble using a telephone...
