Hun Sen’s condolences to Kem Sokha seen as rare unity

A moment of compassion between two of Cambodia’s most prominent political figures has been hailed as a rare sign of solidarity in a country often defined by sharp divisions.

Senate President Hun Sen, who also leads the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, sent a letter of condolence to former opposition leader Kem Sokha after the death of Sokha’s mother, Sao Nget, on 9 July. In his message, Hun Sen and his wife expressed “heartfelt sympathy and sorrow” for the family’s loss. Sokha’s daughter, Kem Monovithya, responded with gratitude, thanking the veteran leader for his kindness and humanitarian concern.

Hun Sen went further by attending the funeral in Takeo province on 10 July, a gesture described by Senate officials as an act of compassion that transcends political differences. Sokha himself was temporarily ordained as a monk during the Buddhist rites, underscoring the solemnity of the occasion.

Analysts and fellow politicians have praised the exchange. Senate Second Vice‑President Thun Vathana said Hun Sen’s presence reflected “moral integrity and unity across every divide”, while policy analyst Seun Sam argued that such gestures demonstrate solidarity at a time when Cambodia faces external pressures. “Political rivalry should be limited to differences over policies,” he said. “When it comes to the national interest, we should unite and work together.”

The episode comes just weeks after Sokha, 72, was granted a royal pardon that lifted his house arrest, though he remains barred from political activity and foreign travel. His arrest in 2017 and subsequent conviction for alleged collusion with foreign powers had long symbolised the deep rift between Cambodia’s ruling party and its former opposition.

For many observers, the exchange of condolences marks a rare moment of civility in Cambodian politics. While it does not erase years of rivalry, it offers a glimpse of dialogue and mutual respect that analysts say could help foster trust and strengthen national unity.
