Football mourns as Kevin Keegan dies aged 75

Kevin Keegan, one of English football's greatest players and most charismatic managers, has died aged 75 following a battle with stomach cancer.

The former England captain, Liverpool legend and Newcastle United icon passed away surrounded by his family after being diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer earlier this year.

Family's heartbreaking tribute

In a statement, Keegan's family said:

"It is with immense sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75."

They said the former England player and manager died peacefully with his wife Jean and their daughters by his side.

The family described him as a devoted husband, father and grandfather and thanked the medical staff who cared for him during his illness.

Football pays tribute

Newcastle United led the tributes, describing Keegan as far more than a legendary footballer and manager.

The club said:

"Kevin was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters."

It praised the belief and excitement he brought both as a player and manager, adding that his impact would live on through the generations of fans he inspired.

Liverpool also honoured one of the club's greatest players.

"Liverpool FC is deeply saddened and mourning the passing of the legendary Kevin Keegan. Our 'Mighty Mouse', his legacy at Liverpool will be forever etched in history."

A glittering playing career

Born in Doncaster, Keegan began his professional career at Scunthorpe United before Bill Shankly signed him for Liverpool in 1971.

He went on to become one of Europe's finest footballers, winning:

• Three First Division titles.

• One European Cup.

• Two UEFA Cups.

• Two Ballon d'Or awards (1978 & 1979).

• The Bundesliga with Hamburg.

For England he earned 63 caps, captaining the national side 31 times.

Across his club career he scored 204 goals in 592 appearances.

The Entertainer

Keegan became just as famous as a manager.

He transformed Newcastle United into one of England's most exciting teams during the 1990s, leading the Magpies to promotion before almost ending Manchester United's dominance in the Premier League.

His passionate television outburst after beating Leeds United in 1996 remains one of football's most memorable moments.

"I would love it if we beat them... love it!"

Although Newcastle narrowly missed out on the title, Keegan's swashbuckling football earned his side the nickname "The Entertainers."

England manager

Keegan later managed England, taking charge in 1999 before resigning following defeat to Germany at Wembley in October 2000.

He also enjoyed successful spells with Fulham and Manchester City, guiding both clubs back to the top flight.

A true football icon

Few figures have left such a lasting mark on English football.

As both player and manager, Kevin Keegan inspired millions with his passion, attacking football and infectious enthusiasm for the game.
