Phnom Penh pledges free cremations for poor

Phnom Penh’s city administration has announced that destitute residents, including homeless people and families unable to afford funeral costs, will receive free cremation services and coffins.

The move was confirmed on Wednesday by Dao Samphors, Deputy Director of Administration and spokesperson for the Phnom Penh Capital Administration. He said the city would ensure that vulnerable households are not left without support during times of loss.

The announcement follows public debate online after price lists for cremation services at several pagodas were circulated on social media. Although temple abbots later explained the charges, the controversy highlighted concerns over access to funeral rites for the poorest.

In Cambodia, cremation is the central Buddhist funeral rite, seen as essential for guiding the soul towards rebirth. Families traditionally prepare the body at home before monks lead prayers and the coffin is taken to the temple crematorium. For those unable to meet the costs, the risk of being denied proper rites carries deep cultural and spiritual anxiety.

Samphors stressed that the administration would provide coffins to families facing severe financial hardship, alongside free cremation. Residents in need are urged to contact their local commune or district authorities, or call the 1299 hotline, to secure assistance.

The pledge reflects wider efforts to ensure dignity for all citizens, regardless of income. In Cambodian belief, failing to perform funeral rites risks leaving the soul unsettled, making state support vital for both spiritual and social reasons.

By stepping in, Phnom Penh’s authorities hope to ease the burden on families already struggling with poverty, while reinforcing the city’s commitment to compassion and community care.
