Trump warns China and Russia: Arming Iran would be 'very bad'

President Donald Trump has issued a blunt warning to China and Russia, declaring it would be "very bad" for both countries if they supplied weapons to Iran as fighting in the Middle East continues.

In a strongly worded statement, Trump said neither Beijing nor Moscow was currently participating in the conflict and insisted both leaders had personally assured him they would not arm Tehran.

Xi and Putin gave assurances

Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping told him during a recent meeting in Beijing that China would not provide weapons to Iran under any circumstances.

He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin had also assured him Moscow would not supply arms to Tehran despite its close ties with the Islamic Republic.

"Two major countries that people speak of often in terms of Iran are, in my opinion, not participating," Trump wrote on social media.

"If they did, it would be very bad for them – certainly not in their best interests."

Concerns over foreign support

The comments come amid continued speculation over possible military support for Iran from its international allies.

Western intelligence reports have previously claimed Russia supplied Iran with drones, food and medical assistance, while separate reports suggested China had considered providing air defence systems.

Neither country has publicly acknowledged supplying weapons for the current conflict.

Iran crackdown intensifies

Trump's warning also comes as Iran continues a sweeping internal crackdown.

Human rights organisations say the regime executed more than 100 people last month, including three women, as authorities sought to suppress growing dissent following renewed fighting with the United States and Israel.

Campaigners say dozens of those executed had taken part in anti-government demonstrations, raising fears the regime is intensifying repression as the conflict drags on.

I saw a report the other day suggesting Russia might have provided satellite intel to Iran which was then used to attack a US base in the region. So no weapons.. but intel is just as valuable I'm pretty sure.
