Cambodia’s tourism industry has taken a heavy hit, with international arrivals plunging nearly 48% in the first half of 2026. Official figures from the Ministry of Tourism show just 1.75 million visitors between January and June, down from 3.36 million a year earlier. China, Vietnam and the United States remained the top three inbound markets, but all recorded double‑digit declines. Chinese arrivals fell 23% to 452,200, Vietnamese visitors dropped 28% to 447,700, and Americans slipped 11% to 104,640. Analysts point to a mix of pressures behind the downturn. The sector has been a vital source of jobs and foreign exchange, generating $3.87 billion in gross revenue from 5.57 million international visitors in 2025. The latest figures mark a sharp reversal from the steady growth seen through the 2020s, when Cambodia positioned itself as a rising destination in Southeast Asia. Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh’s cultural attractions and the beaches of Sihanoukville drew millions, while eco‑tourism projects in provinces such as Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri broadened the country’s appeal. The slump now raises questions about how quickly Cambodia can recover. Officials stress the importance of diversifying tourism offerings and strengthening regional cooperation to restore confidence.
