Cambodia clears 27,000 war relics from rivers

Cambodia has removed tens of thousands of unexploded war relics from its waterways in a major clearance drive aimed at boosting safety and trade.

The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) announced that between 2023 and 28 July this year, teams recovered more than 26,900 pieces of underwater unexploded ordnance (UXO) and over 276 tonnes of heavy debris from riverbeds. Around 15,200 items were destroyed, while 8,250 were safely defused.

CMAC Director-General Heng Ratana said the operation not only protects citizens but also secures vital transport routes. “Clearing unexploded ordnance and salvaging sunken vessel remnants contributes significantly to ensuring navigation safety for cargo and passenger transportation,” he told officials at a review meeting.

The clearance was overseen by an interministerial committee led by Secretary of State Chea Sokunthea. Teams worked to neutralise explosives and remove steel wreckage from sunken vessels, hazards that have long posed risks to communities and river users.

Officials stressed that the work goes beyond public safety. By opening safe waterways, Cambodia is strengthening conditions for investment, port development, fishing, tourism and wider socio-economic growth. Ratana said the effort aligns with government policy to promote national safety and development.

Cambodia’s rivers remain crucial economic arteries, carrying goods and passengers across the country and into regional trade networks. Removing decades-old remnants of war is seen as essential to unlocking their full potential.

The clearance drive highlights how post-conflict nations continue to grapple with the legacy of war, while also underlining the role of mine action in supporting peace, commerce and community resilience.
