Pattaya court denies bail to four murder suspects

Pattaya Provincial Court has refused bail for four suspects in murder cases involving two Russian siblings and a family of three, citing the severity of the allegations and the possibility that they could flee.

The decisions were issued on 1 August after police brought suspects before the court in connection with the two linked investigations. The court said the alleged crimes carry high penalties and that investigators opposed temporary release.

Russian siblings case

The first case concerns two Russian siblings who disappeared along with their Honda ADV  motorcycle. Police later found the motorcycle buried.

The two suspects named in the court proceedings were Thana Kerdthong, known as Pong, 43, and Thongchai Srinil, 39. Investigators from Huay Yai Police Station sought their first period of detention at Pattaya Provincial Court.

The allegations include jointly committing premeditated murder to obtain or retain benefits arising from another offence, or to conceal another offence. The suspects also face accusations of jointly committing night-time robbery, wearing police uniforms, and jointly possessing firearms and ammunition.

The court rejected their bail requests, noting that they had been arrested under warrants, the case carries severe penalties and the alleged conduct was serious. It also accepted investigators' concern that the suspects could abscond if released.

Family-of-three murder case

The court also refused bail in a second case involving the alleged killing and burial of a father, mother and child.

The charges include jointly committing premeditated murder to obtain or retain benefits arising from another offence, or to conceal another offence, as well as jointly committing night-time robbery, wearing police uniforms and jointly possessing firearms and ammunition.

The court gave similar reasons for refusing temporary release in this case, pointing to the high potential penalties, the seriousness of the alleged circumstances and investigators' objections over the risk of flight.

Prison officers later took the suspects to Pattaya Remand Prison.

Further questioning continues

Police have also summoned Chatchanan Paen-iam, known as Fluke, for further questioning, saying there were important issues still requiring investigation. Officers did not disclose further details to the media.

Regarding some news reports suggesting that the suspects may be involved in the murder of more than five people, is currently under investigation. The police have not yet confirmed any facts and are in the process of meticulously looking at all details and evidence.
