130-Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Fossil Discovered in Chaiyaphum

Researchers have discovered a more than 130-million-year-old carnivorous dinosaur fossil in Chaiyaphum, making it the oldest dinosaur fossil yet found in the province. The discovery was made in Ban Khwao district after local residents used a backhoe to level ground for the construction of a crematorium. A 53-year-old local man, Yodsanya, noticed unusual bone fragments and submitted them for examination, which confirmed that they belonged to a dinosaur. Researchers have now recovered more than 100 fossil fragments, including vertebrae, leg bones, joints, ankle bones and toe bones. Fossilised shark remains were also discovered at the same site, offering scientists additional clues about the prehistoric environment. The dinosaur is believed to be more than 20 million years older than the famous Nagatitan fossil previously discovered in Chaiyaphum, which lived around 110 to 115 million years ago. Scientists will continue excavating beneath the limestone and studying the remains to determine more about the species. Once research is complete, the community hopes to develop the site into an educational centre and tourist attraction.
