His death has nevertheless triggered a much wider debate about the extraordinary level of public scrutiny directed at him during the final weeks of his career. Family says campaign of misinformation was ‘too much’In a statement issued through Arday's publisher, his family said they were “in shock” at the loss of an “amazing father, partner, brother, uncle and son”. They said Arday had been subjected to a sustained campaign of abuse for more than three years and claimed the “campaign of misinformation was too much for Jason”. They asked the media to leave the family alone, saying the harassment surrounding Arday and his family had continued for far too long. Colleague spoke to him on the morning he diedPerhaps the most disturbing new detail has come from Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, director of Cambridge's Autism Research Centre, who said he spoke to Arday on the morning of his death. Baron-Cohen said Arday felt unable to leave his home and had described what he believed was a campaign against him. “He's experienced what he described as a campaign against him, for the last three years,” Baron-Cohen said. According to his account, Arday told him: “They've destroyed my life.” Baron-Cohen said the academic had been subjected to relentless personal attacks and argued that the situation raised serious safeguarding questions. Friend says Arday felt there was ‘no way out’Professor Kehinde Andrews, a friend of Arday, also described the professor as deeply distressed following his resignation. Andrews said Arday was “very down” and “very upset”, felt there was “no way out”, had largely stopped leaving the house and had lost a significant amount of weight. He said the media campaign had taken a massive toll and described the level of scrutiny as unprecedented. The accounts provide a disturbing picture of Arday's final days, although they do not establish that media scrutiny caused his death. That question will ultimately be for the relevant authorities and any investigations to determine. Sadiq Khan condemns ‘public hounding’Mayor of London Sadiq Khan was among those condemning the treatment Arday received. Khan described it as an “unacceptable public hounding and campaign of abuse”, saying Arday had been subjected to what he called a “pernicious public shaming”. “His death was a tragedy, but once again it should be a wake-up call for all of us,” Khan said. Education Secretary Lucy Powell said she was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the death and urged people to remember that there were real people and loved ones behind the controversy. Cambridge now faces uncomfortable questionsArday resigned last week as professor of sociology of education at Cambridge after allegations of plagiarism and growing questions about aspects of his academic record and personal achievements. He denied plagiarism but acknowledged errors in some of his work. Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Arday his PhD, had investigated allegations concerning his doctoral thesis and upheld its decision to award him the doctorate. Cambridge subsequently announced an investigation into his appointment after receiving what it described as new information about his qualifications, honorary appointments and complaints concerning academic misconduct. The University of Glasgow, where Arday had previously worked, also announced a review. From remarkable childhood to Cambridge professorArday's rise to Cambridge had been extraordinary. He said he had been non-verbal until the age of 11 and unable to read or write until 18. He went on to obtain a doctorate, become a professor at Glasgow and eventually take up the Cambridge chair in 2023. At 37, he became Cambridge's youngest-ever Black professor, an appointment hailed at the time as an important milestone for diversity within British academia. He had also carried the Olympic Flame during the 2012 London Games and recently published a memoir describing the extraordinary journey of his life. His resignation was not an admission of guiltWhen he resigned, Arday was explicit that he did not regard his departure as an acceptance of the allegations surrounding him. He said criticism was an inevitable part of academic life but argued that what he had experienced had gone far beyond scholarly disagreement. “The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love,” he said. His resignation came as Cambridge itself was preparing to investigate his appointment. A tragedy that leaves difficult questionsCambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice said the university was “desperately saddened” by Arday's death, while former employers Durham and Glasgow also paid tribute to him. For now, the only certainty is that a 41-year-old father, partner, son, brother and academic has died, leaving a devastated family behind. Whatever eventually emerges from the investigations into Jason Arday's career, his death should not become another reason for people to rush to judgement.
