Hayden Panettiere: a remarkable career cut short at 37

Hayden Panettiere, the former child star who became a household name through Heroes and Nashville, has died at 37, with new details emerging about the final hours of an actress whose life was marked by extraordinary success, personal struggles and a determined fight to rebuild her career.

Panettiere was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday afternoon. Police records released Tuesday show that her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother Zach called 911. Brian showed responding officers a bag containing Panettiere's medications, although much of the report has been redacted.

An autopsy found no signs of trauma, but the official cause and manner of death remain pending further testing. Authorities have not confirmed reports of a possible overdose.

A child star from the beginning

Panettiere began working almost from infancy, appearing in commercials at just 11 months old. By her teenage years she had established herself as one of Hollywood's most recognisable young performers, with roles in Remember the Titans, Ice Princess and Bring It On: All or Nothing.

Her breakthrough came in 2006 when she was cast as Claire Bennet, the seemingly indestructible cheerleader in the hit NBC series Heroes. She later starred as country singer Juliette Barnes in Nashville, a role that showcased both her acting and singing talents.

Her career stretched for more than three decades, but behind the success was a deeply troubled personal life.

A very public struggle

Panettiere spoke openly about addiction, postpartum depression, alcohol and opioid problems and domestic abuse. She also revealed the devastating decision to relinquish custody of her daughter, Kaya, to her former partner, Ukrainian boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, in 2018 while she struggled with substance misuse.

Earlier this year she released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, reflecting on the difficult journey from child star to adult actress and mother.

Her family had already suffered an unimaginable loss. Panettiere's younger brother, Jansen, died in 2023 at just 28 from an enlarged heart with aortic valve complications.

Now her parents are grieving the loss of both children.

Remembered beyond Hollywood

Klitschko paid tribute to Panettiere, saying his family was experiencing “profound shock and grief” and remembering her immense talent and the darker side of a demanding entertainment industry.

Panettiere was also a passionate advocate. She campaigned for animal rights, mental-health awareness and environmental causes, and became a prominent supporter of Ukraine following Russia's invasion, helping raise money for medical supplies and protective equipment.

Just two weeks before her death, she filmed a campaign for PETA protesting marine parks.

Her death comes at a particularly cruel moment. After years away from the spotlight, Panettiere had begun rebuilding her acting career, appearing in Amber Alert in 2024 and Sleepwalker in 2026.

She leaves behind her 11-year-old daughter.

For millions who knew her first as the fearless cheerleader of Heroes or the troubled country singer of Nashville, Hayden Panettiere's death is the loss of a familiar face. But her story was far more complicated than her Hollywood roles — a life of extraordinary talent, painful battles, advocacy and, in her final years, an attempt to begin again.

Her comeback was underway.

It ended far too soon.

Seems like the thick is plottening, as her ex and current boyfriend (same guy, BTW) was at her place when the EMS got there.

It sounds like a tragic fentanyl accident, but she also recently went off on Hollywood characters for Epstein like behavior toward her and others like her. So I hope they investigate thoroughly.

TBH, I didn't even know that name until her death. Shame, because it looks like she had a great career ahead of her.

Hayden Panettiere was a druggie, always had problems because of her drug taking.

She even gave up custody of her own child, because she was an unfit mother due to her drug issues.

They're all trying to blame the ex boyfriend in her family camp, but clearly she wanted to have sex with him whilst high on drugs and accidentally took an overdose.

She appears to have been a broken human being.
