Traveling aound Thailand during initial 90 day Non-O period

Featured Replies

I'm planning to retire in Thailand next year, but I'd like to spend the first 90 days visiting (living in) multiple cities (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Jomtien, etc.) before deciding where to settle. I'd probably use a mix of hotels and Air BnB during that period.

Would this present any problems with getting the 1st 12-month extension? I'm presuming that I can get a bank account in the first month. Just wondering if Immigration might object to not securing a long-term lease until a few weeks before the extension application. If it matters, I'm from the US.

Since you entered Thailand with a Non O you are not tied to applying for extension at any particular office where you file a TM30.

It's possible that at time of extension application you may be asked for a lease and obviously a TM30

That will depend on the immigration office.

Re open a Thai bank account that should be fine with Non immigrant status.

The bank may ask for a COR.

That will depend on bank and even branch

Just note that wherever you decide to open a bank account you'll need to ensure you've filed a TM30 with the relevant Immigration office in order to obtain a COR.

Another point, just be aware, if you open an account in Bangkok, but then withdraw funds from ATM's in other Provinces, you'll be charged an 'out of Province' charge, usually between 20 - 30 BHT per transaction. When you find a place to settle have your account transferred to that Province to avoid such charges.

Thanks. So basically I should be ok by doing this? I should definitely have a lease in place before the 90 days are up.

Thanks, hadn't heard that before so it's good to know. Just curious, does that fee apply to all transactions (i.e. scan pay) or just ATM withdrawals? I imagine those might add up during those 90 days.

You should definitely live in Thailand for at least 90 days before you decide to retire here.

Your cart is before the horse.

Who knows? You may like retirement in Ensenada, Mexico better because it's closer to San Diego.

Americans are kinda weird that way. 😄

Understood. Fortunately in my case, it does not have to be a permanent solution. Trying out multiple cities in Thailand is part of the process of deciding what I want my retirement to look like. I can always change my mind and go elsewhere or even return home whenever I see fit. Or I may just live as a nomad for a few years.

In general though, I've got a pretty high tolerance for crummy living situations (I've been married).

Good strategy. But I would avoid Pattaya or Jomtien as you call it.

No need to actually live there to learn what your retirement would look like there. It's pretty well known what that lifestyle entails in La Zona Roja (Red Light District).

It's only ATM, and only if you use your ATM card. If you use your bank's ATM and use your banking phone app to do a cardless withdraw, that doesn't have a fee.

Each area will have its individual pros and cons. Jomtien is actually at the top of my list due to multiple factors. People can and do coexist with the RLD there. Nothing in life is ever truly black or white.

Seems to me you have comprehensive plan.

Bit left field however places like Jomtien and to slightly lesser extent HH have added bonus of proximity to Bangkok airports.

For some means little however for some wishing to travel then it's a bonus.

When applying for extension the Lease will be good idea.

The primary attractions of Jomtien for me are the beach and the large expat community. It would provide a "soft landing" to settle in Thailand. I do intend to do some traveling, so airport access is certainly important. That would be one key advantage of living in Bangkok itself.

I live in Bangkok. Jomtien would be good alternative.

"proximity to Bangkok airports"

From Hua Hin to Swampy its basically 3,5 hours on the bus, albeit a direct bus. To Don Mueang you may well spend 5 hours or more. So much for "proximity".

Fair point. I would consider only Hua Hin for a few years down the road when I start to really slow down.

If you plan on doing the extension yourself, you may want to get your bank account as soon as you arrive in Thailand. I believe that the 800K needs to be in the account 2 months prior to the non-O extension.

I would also recommend doing the extension with at least a week or 2 remaining on the visa just in case immigration wants something that is a surprise to you.

Yes, my intent would be to open the 800k account asap after initial arrival. My understanding is that this is possible with just a CoR/TM30 from a hotel/AirBnB rather than a full long-term lease.

Most likely I would secure the long-term lease after 60-70 days maximum.

The other option, I suppose, would be to enter as Visa-exempt and be a tourist for a couple of months. Then exit and re-enter on the Non-O. But the timing of that might be a little tricky and it's unclear whether Immigration at the airport would allow that.

That is correct.

As, for the idea enter visa exempt then exit and reenter with Non O eVisa... Skip that idea.

No point no value

The only reason I might do this would be if I wanted to do a tour of other countries before settling in. For example I may want to visit Saigon and Da Nang for a few weeks each. Maybe also some time in Kuala Lumpur. I figure it wouldn't hurt to be a slow-travel tourist for a bit.

Obviously you are well aware of options.

Previously I travelled to Saigon (in the main) OFTEN.

Just one person's opinion.

I would enter with the Non O.

Open bank a/c ASAP.

Obtain the extension after two month seasoning.

Obtain a multi reentry permit.

Then your done. Travel as often as you wish

You're probably correct. I will have all the time in the world to travel. No need to compress it into the first 3 months.

Banks do not accept a hotel address for opening a bank account.
Check first with any AirBnB accommodation they will file a TM30, or at least provide signed copies of the owners ID and Tabien Baan for you to file it.

Also banks now request proof of a present/previous overseas address in the form of a Government issued document, such as a national ID card, or Driving licence.

Thanks. I will have a driver's license from the US so that should not be a problem. As for the bank, I will probably do a 30 day AirBnB for my initial arrival.

A cheap 40m2 apartment might be better than an Airbnb as you can guarantee the apartment is an established company and can provide receipts and rental agreement. Dump your stuff there at minimal expense and go off on your travels. When you know where you want to live in Thailand, move.

Food for thought:

I tried to open a new bank account yesterday with SBC branch Hua Hin and was turned away as they did not accept my valid 90 day Non O visa. I told them I am a long term resident (rental contract) and client of Bangkok Bank (bank book) and said Non O for one year will be done next week. They said Non O for one year is a bank requirement and told me to come back next week.

Were that the case at all banks, then you'd never be able to open an account to deposit the necessary funds to apply for an extension.

They just didn't want to help you. There's no such requirement.

I suspect if you were to return with the 1-year extension, there would be a new reason or 5 why they can't help you.

Yeah, that was something I've never heard of either. Thanks for confirming.
