MAGA rebels turn on Trump over who owns ‘America First’

Donald Trump's battle with former allies Marjorie Taylor Greene and Tucker Carlson is developing into something bigger than another MAGA family feud — a fight over who has the right to define the “America First” movement. Greene hit back after Trump's latest attacks by declaring: “We never changed, Trump did.” Her argument is that she, Carlson and other dissenters have remained faithful to the non-interventionist and nationalist principles that originally helped build Trump's coalition, while the president has moved away from them.

The foreign-policy split is widening

The disagreement has been building for months, particularly over Trump's approach to military intervention and foreign policy. Greene and Carlson have increasingly challenged the president's willingness to use American power overseas, arguing that intervention conflicts with the anti-war instincts that attracted many voters to the original MAGA movement. What began as criticism of individual policies is now becoming a much more fundamental argument over what America First actually means.

Carlson is building an alternative

Tucker Carlson has taken the argument a step further by outlining a 10-point political vision centred on themes including national sovereignty, economic strength and a more restrained foreign policy. He has also spoken about helping create a third party, although no formal party has yet emerged and Carlson has not announced a presidential campaign. That distinction matters — this is not yet a replacement political machine for Trump. But Carlson is increasingly doing something more significant than simply attacking the president: he is describing what could come after Trump.

Trump still owns the MAGA machine — for now

Trump retains enormous advantages: the presidency, the established MAGA brand and a political organisation built around his personal leadership. But Greene and Carlson are challenging the assumption that Trump's control of the movement automatically means he controls its ideas. Their argument is increasingly simple: Trump may still own MAGA politically, but he doesn't necessarily own America First ideologically. If the foreign-policy divide continues to deepen, that distinction could become one of the biggest internal battles on the American right.
