Thailand Pushes Back Against Cambodian Action Over Anutin Border Visit

Cambodia formally protested Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s August 23 visit to a disputed border area, accusing him of entering Cambodian territory without permission. Thai officials rejected that claim, saying Anutin was carrying out a routine visit to troops near the Chong An Ma crossing and was not attempting to change or demarcate the border. The disagreement reflects competing interpretations of historical maps and of the December 2025 joint statement governing conduct along the frontier. Reports that Cambodia could pursue legal action or an arrest warrant were dismissed by Anutin, who said Thailand had acted lawfully and remained within its existing position. Bangkok called for the dispute to be handled through bilateral mechanisms such as the Joint Boundary Commission and warned that threats or unilateral claims would make a peaceful settlement more difficult.
